Told cops where to go for over 29 years… |
https://nypost.com/2023/07/28/...ng-fatally-run-over/ Shocking body cam video captured the moment a Colorado cop tased a fleeing man after a traffic stop — who then fell across the lanes of a busy highway, where he was fatally struck by a passing SUV. Deputy Lorenzo Lujan stopped Brent Allen Thompson, 28, about 9 p.m. Feb. 18 near a hotel off Interstate 25 in Larimer County when he noticed that his Ford Fusion had expired tags, 9 News reported. But Thompson got onto northbound I-25 and Lujan followed him until the driver stopped near the Mountain Vista Drive exit, according to the outlet, which cited a letter by District Attorney Gordon McLaughlin. Thompson, of Loveland, identified himself as “Jacob Jones,” but the deputy – who was joined by a partner at the scene — quickly discovered that he gave a fake name. The driver insisted that he had not lied but bolted when told he was under arrest – running down an embankment toward the highway, the newly released video shows. Yeah…. The cop and the department are going to pay a heck of a settlement there, I think.

Why would the cop and department be on the hook when the man fled a legit traffic stop and arrest? If he had just stepped out and not run, he'd still be alive. His own actions caused his death.

Because coppers should have been able to see into the future and know what would happen if they chased the fleeing subject? And then to taze the subject instead of shooting him in the leg, will, that tasering disoriented the subject and as a result of the taser and disorientation, the cops allowed the subject to get hit. Or something along those lines while not allowing the whole, "if the subject just gave us his real name, he'd be alive or; if the subject didn't run while we were placing him under arrest, he'd be alive" argument in court. Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. I actually don’t think this one’s all that funny. I find it pretty grisly, actually, and it surely wasn’t a good day for the cop who froze up and watched a guy he gazed get run over and killed. This one doesn’t file under FAFO for me. If the guy had pulled a gun or knife, then yeah, it goes in that category pretty handily. This was just a really tragic day for at least two people, even if we have no pity for the guy who got run over. ______________________________________________ “There are plenty of good reasons for fighting, but no good reason ever to hate without reservation, to imagine that God Almighty Himself hates with you, too.”

Does anyone know what the usual policies are about tasing unarmed subjects in a active roadway, away from emergency lights?

Of course... Citizen - Ran from the police - Gave false information - Ran from police again on foot - Ran into traffic At Fault: Police Granted, tazing a suspect in the middle of the freeway, at night, was likely not the best move. However the suspect did in fact run into traffic, on a freeway at night... also not the best move. I’m gonna call it like I see it with the info available from this video, horrible decision on behalf of the officer. Expired tags, a false name given, and a foot chase? I don’t think law enforcement should be this guys career. I can’t even call that accidental. Whether he got tired of the chase, thought he was gonna loose the race, or didn’t realize that he tased him on a highway, his judgment sucks and a young man is dead. I’m guessing that is prosecutable.

Well, I mean, when it comes right down to it the suspect was at fault for all of it right up to the point where the officer deployed an immobilizing technology just in time to drop the guy in a highway lane and then stand there and go "oh fuck" while a vehicle approached. Officer was doing great right up to that point. The videos I've seen where someone is being physically threatening and a danger to those around them and they do a faceplant with velocity when the probes hit them, I laugh and there's zero pity. This isn't that. My parents both did the job. Only once did my father tell me about some wets he chased through the train yard in El Paso where they all ran under a moving train car and one of them slipped and got cut in half. In a private conversation with his son, decades later he said it was the guy's choice to duck under a train, but he always carried guilt because in the end, he was the guy chasing him and wasn't far behind him when he died a horrible death. We can all absolve the officer in this video of all wrongdoing because the guy running was running, but in the quiet moments at night, decades from now, that officer is going to remember that night and I wager it's not going to be with a smile. The guy who ran him over? He didn't ask for that, and I can only imagine when he thinks of it, it's worse because he'd had to wonder if he wouldn't have killed the guy if he weren't immobilized with voltage as the car sped towards him. ______________________________________________ “There are plenty of good reasons for fighting, but no good reason ever to hate without reservation, to imagine that God Almighty Himself hates with you, too.”

For those of y’all who are cops, how many of y’all would have run onto the highway on that situation? Seems far too dangerous for the cop, too.

Uh, no. By age 4 I had learned not to play in traffic. There's a risk/reward calculation that we cops dont always follow, particularly early in the career.

Wait, what? |
^^^ This in spades. Society needs to ends this foolishness of blaming cops for every single stupid act committed by criminals that get them injured or killed. That is, if they want to have a functioning society. “Remember to get vaccinated or a vaccinated person might get sick from a virus they got vaccinated against because you’re not vaccinated.” - author unknown

I’ve been pulled over 4 times in my life, mostly in my 20’s. Managed to survive every encounter. I must be very lucky. “Crisis is the rallying cry of the tyrant.” – James Madison "Keep your fears to yourself, but share your courage with others." - Robert Louis Stevenson

Another perspective... was the driver of the vehicle that struck the suspect paying attention, or distracted? By the video counter the guy hits the pavement at 0:57 and is struck around 0:52. Granted, that is only 5 seconds and it was dark. However, if you're driving down the freeway and paying attention, and you see lights coming across the median at you then circling in front of you, would you not at least slow down or change lanes? Assuming of course your nose wasn't buried in your phone, or in a conversation. I also noted that the freeway wasn't the first time he ran out into traffic in the dark, he was standing on the right side of a road and ran across that in the dark before ever getting to the freeway. This dude was taking a lot of risks that night. Regardless of how they all ended up there, it's highly likely those officers will never be the same after that brief moment in time. Come on guys. He tased him in the middle of a fucking traffic lane. What did he think would happen? Then he fucking stands there and watches it unfold. This guy has no business being a cop. That was a stupid choice. Yes I expect better from police.
