Pretty cool. Never read about this guy. Video is a tad wonky, some of the pictures dont seem to be in sink with the audio. But good story none the less

Some people believe that he became an ace during the Vietnam War, but the credit was given to other pilots, so that the Air Force wouldn’t reassign him to the U.S.. He did fudge on how many missions he actually flew for just that reason. He wanted to stay in theater leading his men for as long as he could get away with it. We could use more men like him.

and believes he is the only man to shoot down a (German) plane while in the glide...remarkable...

(he was so excited that when he dropped his tanks he failed to turn on his internal fuel tanks and both engines quit on his P-38)

he was not afraid to speak his mind...

Robin Olds - a legend for anyone interested in air combat. Truly a great man.

There is an excellent book abut his life. Fighter Pilot, written by Ed Rasimus, a former Thud and Phantom driver who wrote several books on his flying experiences as well.

Just an update. Col. Rasberry passed peacefully in his sleep last Thursday morning. A life very well lived!

He's sort of the Chesty Puller of the Air Force.

A legend within the service but not well known outside of it.

Yes, once again politicians cause service members to lose their lives. Thank god we have Trump, who came at a most opportune moment in our history.

I've spoken to several men who flew with Gen Olds, and they said he did shoot down at least 5 MiGs over 'Nam. . .

I had the honor of meeting Gen Olds in 2005. I'm still kicking myself that I never asked him personally about how many 'real' kills he had.

peripherally related, a few weeks back I was staying at Luke AFB taking an AF Search and Rescue Course (learning Search Theory), and I was staying in base housing on Bong Avenue. My first pick up driver (a Captain) was commenting on how it was funny to have a street named Bong on a military installation.

I told him it was named after a WW2 pilot who initially trained at Luke before going to the Pacific and he was credited with 40 kills

he said he learned something new every day - and it sucked that it had to come from a civilian Big Grin
