Melatonin or hemp for calming a small dog?
We have a doggie dentist coming over for the second time and this time it was requested to give our bichon something to calm him so she can examine and clean his teeth. His first exam/cleaning lasted 2 minutes because he was too squirmy.

He's about 13 pounds. I'd like to get something I can buy from petco, but I've never done this before. Melatonin or hemp?

Thanks.

Tony.

I don't think that is going to help. I would talk with a vet about it.
I did not know there were doggie dentists?

Do you brush his/her teeth regularly?

Perception
One of our dogs is very reactive to fireworks. Last year we tried some hemp CBD treats for her on the recommendation of our vet. We were a little skeptical, but they were actually very effective. They didn't make her sleepy, but they took a notch off her anxiety for sure. We had a peaceful 4th for the first time since we've had her.

Since them we've used them in a few other circumstances we know she struggles with, and we've had the same results. It really seems to just take the edge off for her.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

I have trazodone that I give my anxious dog before we go into the veterinary clinic. I think if you call and explain to the vet that your dog will be anxious they will probably prescribe something prior to the dds visit (to be given 2 to 3 hours in advance).
I have looked into hemp/CBD but I’ve been advised by my vet that this is not regulated and somewhat risky - they did not advise it.
Being a vet tech myself and certainly having tried pot before I see no real harm, but at the same time I’d check and see if they were willing to prescribe some calming agent before turning to this - best of luck.

ETA: I don’t know if your doggie dentist is a vet, but they likely work in conjunction with one. Call them and ask what they do with their frisky patients. *I’m now seeing that vets don’t always recommend “awake dentistry” because you can’t typically access what’s under the gumline where most disease begins.. I’m more a bird person myself, wish I could offer more help, but I don’t do teeth*

.25 Xanax is what we give our 15 lber who is terrified of fireworks. Vet prescribed is about $6 per pill, same generic pill prescribed for humans is about a dime.

We have occasionally used a CBD oil, which is what I would recommend. It is well-tolerated and effective.

Oh my how times have changed! Big Grin

On the 4th of July my Dad would give our 80-pound German Sheppard mix a shot of Ouzo before we expected fireworks to start to take her down a notch. Cool

That always worked well and was a bit entertaining too! Eek

The Vet suggestions are better, I expect they can control the amount needed for the size of your puppy.

This stuff works. I use less than the prescribed amount and they sleep through the bombs on the 4th and New Year’s Eve.
A couple drops on a small treat, let it soak in for a couple minutes.

Why the need to use CBD when there are effective medications available from your vet? Valium from your vet works well.

The wife has "Rescue Remedy", non-prescription calming juice. You smear it on the dog's paw pads before the anxious event. It has a tiny amount of alcohol in it as a solvent, but the rest is herbal.

It worked fine on a 70 pound malamute for fireworks.

It's not a new product at all.

My vet recommended the cbd, I mean why use a lab created narcotic when this natural stuff works so well?

My Vet sedates our dog for dental work . For " calming" during fireworks , etc, they recommended a small dose of Benadryl . It seemed to work .

Rescue Remedy or CBD oil. We also have used doggie melatonin which can be purchased off Amazon.

We had a dog that had cognitive decline and he had sundowners. We used CBD oil from Nuleaf and Select Dog Melatonin. Both worked well in calming him down.
