Authorities install cameras on expressway to help combat shootings, drug trafficking Login/Join

I hope this helps some. As a native Chicagoan, there was plenty of violence and shootings way back when. Most of it was confined to the South Side and West Chicago. Expressway shootings are relatively new. Your average middle class Joe drives the Eisenhower to get around. The thought of guys hanging out of cars shooting at each other is pretty scary. It used to be you could avoid that stuff. Anyway here is the story:

CHICAGO — Drivers on the in and outbound Eisenhower Expressway may have noticed a new network of cameras and license plate readers. They are strategically placed to solve and hopefully end expressway shootings and catch people trafficking drugs in the area.

Officials won’t say exactly where the cameras are or exactly how many but roughly 20 or so cameras have been placed along the I-290 from downtown to the city limits. It is a stretch of road nicknamed “the Heroin Highway” because of the amount of drug trafficking that happens along on the West Side and into downtown.

It is phase one of a program by Hi-Da or the Chicago High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area. It is a coalition of agencies tasked with stopping drugs and gun violence on Chicago area expressways made up of Chicago police, the Office of Emergency Management, Cook County sheriff’s office, IDOT, CDOT, state police and the DEA, among others.

The cameras have been incorporated into the OEMC network of video monitoring and will be run out of that office to help officers solve expressway shootings and try and put an end to the drugs running in and out of Chicago.

There have been 24 expressway shootings this year. Officials expect the cameras not only to help solve them but also be a deterrent. Officials said the cameras are not equipped for tracking speed.

The second phase of this program is to add cameras to other expressways as well. The cameras which are paid for with federal dollars.

I recently said Chicago was turning into the next Detroit; perhaps I should said Tijuana.

Poor choice of words to say a camera will “ combat shootings”
So in typical leftist land this is what will happen:
Gang banger x is recorded shooting someone on the highway
They track him down and arrest him as a 6 time convicted felon in possession of a gun for the crime.
The fed prosecutors don’t bother processing the gun charge because of a million excuses. (My brother as a small town cop routinely served up felon in possession of a gun cases to the fed prosecutors and rarely did they do anything with them)

Gangbanger x makes bail somehow, while out on bail does more criminal activity as a free man for 6-8 months before trial.
Goes to trial and either gets off on a technicality, cold a plea with a sentence reduced to 10 years ( paroled at 6&1/2) and is back to his usual lifestyle again.
However since we spent all that money for cameras and stuff, we will be getting tons of fees for speeding when mr commuter does 59 in a 55

Cause the bad guys never steal cars.....who thought this out?
So a shooters car is identified thru the LPR and camera...but the car is found to be stolen.....waste of money and time, shit will be destroyed within a week or two once word gets out

If they changed the name, nobody would be able to find their way home.

IDing stolen cars in real time is one of the things this type of system does. Why do you think police cruisers are no festooned with plate reading cameras.

They position cruisers downstream of the cameras, if the cameras get a hit, the cruiser get the position, make, model, and color of the car in real time and goes after it.

Putting the repeat offenders in jail would do more than the cameras ever could.

I was a cop, I know how the cameras and LPRs work...I also know after two or three get destroyed the city will drop the program.

This is the simple answer right here.
The vast majority of violent offenders are people who were already caught. Hit them hard out of the gate and even more so on round two ( my personal answer would be a 5 year minimum sentence for first felony and 99 years on the second with no possibility of parole) and the problem will go away. Our catch and release legal system advocated surprise surprise by the liberal left is a dismal failure. The cops know the bad guys where they are and how to catch them. Our legal system does not have the capability to quickly hang them or incarcerate for life with no creature comforts. I have told many people many times the solution is simple. Create an environment where doing wrong results in a 99.95% fatality rate, people will either die or figure out doing wrong is not worth it

It's not going to "combat" a damn thing.

As our astute Braildriver pointed out, putting repeat offenders in prison will.

The cameras are helpful in locating the shootings, and hopefully recording some quality video.

But until the powers that be actually keep these animals in a cage, away from the rest of civilized society, it's just window dressing and waisted money.
