I have the LLBean Baxter State Parka.

The only "complaint" I have about it is that I can only wear it when it is really cold. It is so warm that if the temperature is above 10 degrees, I'm sweating in it. I've had it for ten years, but only wear it once a year or so, consequently it has almost no wear on it.

I bought an L.L. Bean parka years ago. Worked great for the cold and snowy days in Northern Virginia but now that I have retired to South Carolina, the parka sees little use. Keep it on hand should I need to go north during the winter.

I like Filson stuff. It's expensive, but not 1500 bucks expensive. They have sheepskin lined wool coat that will keep you warm in winter in North Dakota. I have a relative in Minot who swears by it.

I vote for the sherpa lined Carharrt jacket with a wool shirt underneath (if you need it). That's been my winter outfit for years and it keeps me toasty to 30-below. Just tested that out again last week and it still works.

And anyone who spends $1500+ on a coat has more money than sense.

Take a drive thru Wyoming or Montana this time of year and every other coat you see will be Carhartt. There is a reason for that. They are tough, warm and comfortable and a whole lot less than some of the coats I've see recommended here.

I have a heavy Carhartt duck coat but I consider it a work coat. Not as warm if not active. The zipper can damage some clothing.

I've got a Carhartt Yukon Extremes parka for when it gets really cold out. Yes, it's big and bulky, but it's warm and the fabric is really durable. It's showing as out of stock on the Carhartt website, but you can probably find them in stock at other retailers.

Eddie Bauer Peak XV down jacket. 800 fill down and very warm, and reasonably priced compared to some of the others listed here. I also have an older Eddie Bauer parka that is 900 fill and Gore Tex. It is even warmer but they don't make that one any more. It's over 20 years old and still wears great!

Stryker Apex Jacket will do you right. Made for ice fishing in extreme conditions. I have the Apex jacket and bibs. They will also float you if you go through the ice. Something I do not risk but anything can happen. Warm, light and wears like a boss. Not cheap but not expensive either.

I’ve found a lot of these had strange left hand pull zippers. Fjallraven makes a nice coat but they need lined chest handwarmer pockets on the Nuuk. If so, I would have bought one today. The lower ones are too low for me.

I got a Canada Goose parka and I am completely happy with it. It is, hands down, the warmest coat I own. Chicago cold is handled with no problem.

I will say, however, that it is a dry cold coat. Not really water repellent (gore tex, etc), but a great coat, none the less.

Have had a LL Bean Maine Warden's Parka for many years.

Heavy, bulky but very comfortable even in single digit temperatures

The left hand zipper is likely because it’s a woman’s jacket.

I’ll offer up a vote for Marmot on the warm side. I can’t remember ever being cold in mine and they hold up real well.

If you want a coat that is a buy once cry once and will be guaranteed to be something that will last long enough to hand down at least one generation take a look at Weatherwool’s offerings. I have their version of a hoodie (called Hooded Jacket) and it’s all I’ve been wearing this winter here in Milwaukee and I’ve been fine in all weather so far, even with the recent cold snap we’ve had. Their stuff is 100% American made and extremely heavy duty. Even with the price tag of over $600 on this hoodie I was surprised with how well built and heavy duty this hoodie is. I absolutely love it.

Their website sucks so if you have questions on anything write an email or give them a call. The owner is very responsive and he says you can call him anytime, night or day.

1000% recommended and I can’t stress this enough.

Here is their Mouton Jacket, it is super expensive but I can guarantee that it is worth it. It’s also one of their items that is made to order. If I had a need for something this warm I’d get one myself.

In Europe left and right zipper isn't a thing.

After living in Alaska for four years, I learned that layering is key. I didn't need a single, expensive parka but one that was a shell w/liner and then layers underneath. Remove layers as needed based on physical exertion.
