Ok I am getting old. I still have 20/20 vision but things are starting to get a little fuzzy. I bought a set of reader glasses and they do help, but only when I am reading a book or kindle fairly close to my face. My PC monitor is probably 2 feet away and the glasses dont work well at that distance.

Are there readers for a couple of feet when something isnt right in your face like a book?

Yes. I wear prescription tri-focals. Top segment is for distant vision, bottom is for reading, the middle is for distances like computer work, instrument panel in the airplane, etc.

The correction for the intermediate segment is one half of the reader segment. Example: if my reader (near) prescription is 2.50, the intermediate (computer) segment would be 1.25

If you get your readers from an optician, tell him / her that you want a pair with correction for computer work. You might even want to discuss bifocals, with the computer segment on top and the reading segment below. I use these if I'm going to be doing desk work for a while.

If you buy "drugstore" type readers, try some on, looking for the best correction at the distance you want.

I control + the monitor 10% (or 2 taps) and the words take on a contrast, picture fills but does not overflow the screen and content am I. YMMV, Good luck

I used the reading glasses for years. I was using 220 + back in 2008 to read and like you that's all they were good for.I went to Maryland to visit my brother and picked up his reading glasses 185+ and put them on,I could see like a bird watching tv,but I couldn't read anything. I bought a $5.00 pair and used them till the VA gave me prescription glasses 2010.

I have my computer screen enlarged. I also asked my eye doc for computer glasses. He measured the distance from my eyes to the screen and wrote a prescription accordingly.

I believe you can just buy "weaker" readers. For example if you use +1.5 for up close, test glasses in the +.75 to +1.25 range for stuff at monitor distance.

I am 20/15 post cataract surgery in my distance eye and about 20/30 in my reading eye. I have had monovision for at least 40 years. I wear +1.25 for reading and computer work. 3 pair foot $12 @ Costco.

The answer is yes, but the power depends on your distance Rx and your age. If you are truly Plano for distance, and on the order of around 48-50 years old, the appropriate power for most computer users would be around +1.00 or +1.25. For two feet, probably +1.00.

The dollar store displays sometimes have a test chart on the display and you just try on different powers and see what works for you Also, the glasses are about $1 and I buy several pairs and just scatter them around. When a pair gets scratched or broken, I toss them and move on to another pair.

The less power = more distance you can be.

Psa ...once you start you'll need them more and more.

I bought magnifying glasses on Amazon to use for hobbies now my 1.50 glasses suck.

That's only true if you don't stop aging.

For a screen distance up to 39.78" (1 meter) +1.00 should work. As SigForums' official eye doctor said, it depends on your distance Rx, distance to screen, and age (accomodative amplitude actually, age is a good proxy).

Not using optical help at near won't make the problem better, and using it won't make it worse. Your ability to change focus at near drops off with age. Young kids can focus up to 5 cm (20 diopters). Ten year olds can manage 10 diopters - 10 cm. At 42 it's three diopters, about 33 cm, at maximum effort (uncomfortable), and you need help. You can fight it, but you won't win.

I wear bifocals for my regular glasses. For computer work, I had a second pair of bifocals made at ZenniOptical with the main window corrected for focus at 28", my monitor viewing distance. The lower bifocal reading window is still set to focus at reading distance, so I can handle paperwork, etc. at the computer desk.

This is done by moving part of your "add" up into the main vision prescription. In my case, my "add" is 2.5. So I took 1.25 of it and added it to my main prescription numbers, and then the "add" for the bottom is what's left, in my case 1.25. This results in a closer focus main window, and the same focus bottom window for reading.

Your optician will work with you to determine how much "add" to move up into the main window, and then write you a prescription for computer glasses. In my case, this works for shooting lenses, too, as my front sight is also at 28".

When in doubt, mumble
