Yes let's let one isolated incident dictate the validity of going cloud in general....

Yeah, sure, if you don't want to hire competent IT staff and maintain a robust IT infrastructure of your own: By all means: Farm it out to somebody who may do it for you.

(Spot the key word in the sentence above.)

Or how about RAID arrays that were in secured rooms, with everything on UPS', and were backed up nightly? The backups of which were, in turn, archived to secure, off-site storage on a regular basis?

Long ago I worked in a "computer center" (before they were called Data Centers) and fire suppression consisted of an alarm going off and then the release of a halon gas. I suppose those days are over??????

I bet you this incident is going to make me have to do additional training of some sort.

Really? Massive amounts of water? Not Halon, or whatever the current "green" replacement is?

Curious...

It's not used much anymore. Was banned from production many years ago. There are 'greener' products, but my guess is that they are extremely expensive?

Yeah, they definitely aren't cheap. We use 3M Novec 1230 onboard the ship as a substitute for other suppression systems like Halon or CO2.

This is what saving the environment looks like....It's Sooo MUCH 'Greener' than using that EVIL Halon stuff that was So VERY Bad! Roll Eyes

Halon wasn't used because it was "green." Halon was used because it wouldn't destroy the equipment it was meant to protect from fire. Problem was: Being heavier than air: If it was released into an area with living beings in it, it would kill them by suffocation. So it's use was banned for safety reasons, IIRC.

Its use is not banned. Its production was halted due to its environmental impact.

Its safety really wasn't a reason for it being phased out.
