Watch the Coast Guard shoot at a shark for trying to join a swim call party

Outsiders are often left bewildered if asked to describe the complexities of what the Coast Guard does, at least without offering a gauche “guard the coast” quip.

If anything, the service’s intricate mission now appears even more perplexing after a scene that unfolded last week aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Kimball.

About 40 crew members were enjoying a swim break — replete with an inflatable unicorn named Charles — in the western Pacific when a shark, estimated to be between six to eight feet long, tried to join in the fun.

Unfortunately for the oceanic resident, Coast Guard personnel are known to enforce a strict “We prefer to keep our limbs” policy.

So, as the shark neared the crew, Petty Officer 1st Class Samuel Cintron opened fire.

“Fortunately everyone safely cleared the water, and the shark appeared uninjured as it swam away,” a DoD release said.

Everyone except Charlie the inflatable unicorn.

Toward the end of the video we see a helpless Charles cast aside by a careless crew member, a sacrificial lamb to the slaughter.

One service member then says over the radio that the shark is “heading out by the unicorn.” Another, off camera, implores the rifleman to “sink the unicorn.”

Thankfully, no shots ring out, and the unicorn floats away out of frame.

The Coast Guard has provided no updates on Charles’ whereabouts, but he is believed to have perished so that others might live.

Goodnight, sweet prince.

Its an M4 Being shot in the incident..it’s all over FB.

The unicorn was saved.

The thing is, the fast 5.56 rounds disintegrate upon hitting the water...

Same thing with 7.62...

The rounds are just a distraction to the shark while people are removed from the water.

See, first, you get the shark to hold a charged SCUBA tank between its teeth . ..

When I think about the equipment stored and used on Coast Guard ships, an inflatable unicorn has never crossed my mind for some reason.

This is from somewhere between '67 & '70 in the western Pacific. Our shark watch was the guy way up there on the bow with, if I remember right, a M14. I can't remember his name but I do remember I didn't have a lot of faith in his shooting abilities. To qualify you had to be able to hit the ocean Big Grin

I thought you old salts would sink a sail in the water and swim in the hollow to shield against the sharks. Now that I think about it, the sails on a modern warship have got to be pretty darn big.

We got a swim call day at the end of a med cruise. A couple of the GMG's used the Captains boat for shark watch, they were loving it riding around with an M14 at the ready - but no sharks were seen. I swam down and touched one of the ships propellers (destroyer). It was actually a fun day, had boxing on the helo deck (which was hilarious) and the cooks BBQ'd steaks for the entire crew.

Those guys on the boat need to practice marksmanship. I know they have guys that can put a shotgun slug through the engine of a fast boat while going top speed. I guess he was not on the vessel in question. LOL

We did the same on a cruise in the Caribbean...I swam under the ship...from side to side..then I swam under and touched both props...I was worried the whole time, imagining them firing up a main!! It was weird, cause I could hear the intake for the generators and those running. Got out and swapped with the GM2 and took over the watch.

In all the time I have been at sea I only saw a shark fiddling around a NOOA bouy off the east coast (Charleston) when we took a tech to it. And I fell off a sponge boat in the gulf off Yankeetown Fla and hit/stepped on a shark....scared me so bad I’m sure it took a year or two off of my life!
