FIRST they came to impose mandatory gun registration, 10 years earlier, before Hitler's henchmen came to power. All firearms were to be taken to local Police station for gun registration. Average Germans thought this was a good idea, because small arms, ordinance and machine guns were on the streets.

10 years later, when the little Corporal came to power, Hitler's henchmen simply cross matches the Police gun registration forms with Synagogue congregation records......and the rest was easy. Hitler's flunkies now knew with Jews were armed and with what weapons.

Hitler knew an unarmed society is very easy to round up for "relocation".

Sometimes I'm amazed how many don't even know about it. Several times I've brought it up in conversations and I get a blank stare in response. It's a real danger in those "blame those guys" movements.

I told this story before, but it should be told again. My wife's grandmother was in front of her home in Rostov-na-Donu, Russia when a Nazi officer walked up and said "you look like a Jew". He then shot her with his pistol. She survived when my wife's grandfather came out & pleaded "not Judah, Armenian", then the officer had her taken to a hospital where she survived. My wife's DNA shows about 8% Jewish & she has no idea which side it came from. Probably from her mothers side who had come from the Donetsk area.

The Jews are God's chosen people, that's good enough for me. I'm not a Jew, but with them all the way.

There is "Naked Among Wolves", a novelization of events in Buchenwald by former inmate Bruno Apitz. There was a communist resistance organization within the camp which managed to hide prisoners slated for execution or death marches, steal some weapons from the guards during an air raid, alert American forces to their location via a secret radio, and upon their approach and the SS leaving the camp rose up, seized the watchtowers and took some remaining guards prisoner. Obviously in East Germany, the role of the communists was stressed and the American contribution de-emphasized. It took until the 80s that non-communist inmates like Bonhoeffer were publically mentioned in the GDR.

Maybe it couldn't happen in the same way as a state-organized pogrom, but anti-Semitism is still alive in the West, it still has the potential for violence, it's not confined to a particular political ideology, and it's even growing again under the cover of identity politics and anti-globalism. Because then as now, Jews are considered the original and ultimate internationalists, with no allegiance to the country they live in (other than, today, Israel), always scheming to take advantage of and subvert majority society, etc.

Both Germany and the US recently had armed attacks on synagogues, even though both would have been among the last places I would have expected this. Neither was by classical Nazis, or Islamists, or anti-zionist leftists, all of which have previous form for attacking Jewish installations. Rather they were by stereotypical angry white male loners, self-radicalized on the internet, blaming the Jews for all sorts of stuff like immigration, feminism, socialism, etc., and inspired by other shooting sprees like in Norway and New Zealand.

The German guy who tried (but failed) to invade the synagogue in Halle and ended up shooting random non-Jewish passersby is a perfect example - he told investigators he wasn't a Nazi, just disposed critically towards Jews. Intelligent, started studying chemistry, but had to quit for health reason (underwent major stomach surgery). Unemployed, divorced parents, lived with his mother and spent most of his time with online gaming. No real friends, no girlfriend, and according to his father always blamed others for his problems.

Drifted along into the 4chan crowd, where gaming subculture intersects with conspiracy theories and political extremism on unmoderated boards. Deliberated attacking a mosque or Antifa center, but went for the synagogue even though he knew it was secured, because that's where he saw the root of all evil, and obviously doing that in Germany would get everybody's attention. Built all of his guns and bombs himself, and announced the spree as a live-fire test to prove the effectivity of improvised weapons in his inevitable manifesto uploaded to the internet. Live-streamed everything of course, inspired by the shootings in Christchurch and El Paso.

So yes, anti-Semitic violence is alive and well. It just doesn't necessarily come with jackboots, shouts of "Sieg Heil" or even "Allah-u akbar", but with a helmet-mounted smartphone and gamer-language live commentary. Or in the case of the Philadelphia shooter, a Gab message of "screw your optics, I'm going in".

Evil is always lurking amongst us. Thankfully now it is on the far fringes of society. Kristallnacht was when it became mainstream. If, God forbid, that ever happen here it will be a sign that we as a society are nearing the end.
