Skins2881So here's my dilemma. I like to shoot a good deal. I really want to be a hoarding ammoholic but I can't ever get above a threshold that would really make me happy.
For those on here that do have closets or rooms of ammo, do you also shoot a lot?
I run through about (combined GF and me):
600-1,000 9mm - monthly
600-1,000 .22 - monthly
1,000 5.56 - annually
That's about $3,240 per year spent on ammo just to sustain my tiny stockpile. I think I need a part time job.

lbjIf my daughters shoot with me, we go through 1000rds/month.
If it's just me, 3 hundred max.
My shooting is basically 9mm and 5.56.
What kind of threshold are you looking at?
For me, I put away enough ammo for storage and buy what I think I can shoot now... mostly.
I do rotate stock though as most of my collection is from the nineties when prices were a fraction of what it is now.

DevlDogs55Took this picture shortly before I moved last month. I have a lot of work to do once I get my new garage all squared away. And since I know someone will ask, NO - I don't keep powder in the trunk in the back of the picture.
I have a couple of 2 and 5 gallon buckets full of dirty 5.56 brass, 9mm brass and 300 AAC brass as well.
I took this picture before Monmouth had a sale on some 190gr Nosler blems for my Blackout too!

Got another 3k of those that aren't pictured.

I think we may need to start a shootaholic thread too.
I'm sitting at 7-8k .22, 5k 5.56, and 4,500 9mm.
I'm happy with the .22 & 5.56, the 9mm is what I shoot most and usually fluctuate between 1-3k rds, I'd be happy at 5k for everything.
My biggest fear is prices will skyrocket right at the time I don't have cash on hand. I'm very familiar with Murphy's law. Really my biggest problem is I can't afford to shoot and hoard

Il CattivoLet us know if you start hand-processing brass. At that point you'll probably need an intervention.

lbjI'm gonna claim arthritis.
I have 2 deliveries for Monday and Tuesday.
One is a case of PPU M193 and the other is half a case of PPU M80 7.62X51 in a 50cal can.
Maybe I should do one of those DNA tests where they tell you your genetic makeup.
Maybe I am part Serbian.

FlyingScotI plan on shooting roughly 500 rounds of 9mm tonight (getting her ready for an Oct. 30th advance class) so ordered a case of S&B 9mm. Shoot 500 order a 1000 is roughly how I've been increasing my reserve.
Have a new rifle I built to shoot so in next few weeks probably a few cases of PPU to give that a go.

lbjSome people who may read this thread may be horrified at the numbers here.
However, once we have what we think we need for storage, everything else gets shot up in a hurry.
Everything I am ordering recently is getting used up.

lbjIs 10K enough?
How about 20K, maybe 30K.
Is there an amount where one is ever satisfied?

Hard to say...up to 30k or so with 10k of 5.56....
That's the stash, now I need to keep stocking up on range stuff, normally I have 200-300 9mm, 100-200 5.56 and 1000 22lr sitting in reserve for range time.
I NEED TO TRIPLE THAT....
order 20 mags from PSA and they had those cute little ammo cans of fed 62gr at a great price, picked up 3...should have done 5 at least.
My wife sent me a pic of a package with the happy tag (blue ORD) on it.

lbjI don't have an exact figure either on how much is enough.
I do like having any ammunition stored in a locked container.
The problem has become space.
I suppose I could probably gain 30% to 40% freed up space if I take the ammunition out of the original packaging and use plastic bags with 100rds each to fill the ammo cans.
That method would really give me some extra room so I am thinking about that.
Given my daughters now enjoy shooting, whatever I have stored at the time of my demise will be shared between them and my brother.
I really expect my stored ammunition to outlive me.
I expect them to jump for joy when they see how much there is.
It's a great gift for them, especially at today's prices.
I mean if I'm them, I would be thrilled to receive several thousand dollars worth of ammunition.

May I suggest a seatrain container? You're welcome.

You can make the argument as long as you keep the argument in raw numbers. Where I run into trouble is that there are so many neat options out there - and if a load is interesting enough to look into or even adopt, is a couple of hundred rounds ever going to be enough? Throw a multiplicity of chamberings in on top of that and there always seems to be
something one could use a little more of.
