Today marks the 40th anniversary of the on-duty murder of my friend/former partner Officer Dennis Frank Webb of the San Fernando Police Department. He was killed while attempting to pro-actively detain a subject he believed may have committed an armed robbery just outside the city limits 90 minutes earlier.

Dennis Webb's actions leading up to his death clearly suggest that he had significant concerns about how using "best practices" to safely detain a potentially armed suspect would be judged by others and he elected to treat his killer in a manner advocated by "community leaders" today. When officers arrived in response to his request for backup (in less than two minutes), Dennis was on the sidewalk, bleeding to death from six gunshot wounds, unconscious, and with his gun still holstered. Months later, the murderer remarked to investigators that, "The officer seemed like a nice guy."

At 30 years old (he'd have been 70 now), Dennis' life was over. The lives of his wife (Nancy), other family members, loved ones, friends and co-workers would never be the same. Although residents and visitors grieved then, to this day the City of San Fernando hasn't memorialized the sacrifice of this brave man by naming a street, park, or other place within the community he died protecting in his honor. In the eyes of those who knew Dennis and appreciated what his sacrifice meant, this omission still needs to be rectified.

I hoped to do a podcast interview regarding Dennis today, but while that didn't work out, it looks like something will be presented after the start of the new year. If that happens, I'll post an update and link here.

Please post a link to your podcast. I am retired LEO and i'm sure there are valuable lessons some new LEO's can learn from this.
