Thoughts on this Ghetto car paint "repair"
OK, so it's not really a repair; it's really a cover up. I have a 2008 Yaris and I want to put a paint shield applique kit on the front edge of the hood. It's got a couple of rock dings that have rusted part of which would be covered by the applique. I don't want to get into trying to sand and touch up and all that. Where I live I don't have access to power outlets so dremel/sander etc. is a no go and I don't want to buy a battery powered unit for such a small project.

Thoughts on what I can seal the rust spots with so when I cover them with the applique the rust doesn't get worse.

Thanks.

Unless these are huge rock chips, prep pen + touch up paint = done deal. Smile

If the rust hasn't spread out under the surrounding paint, I've had good luck fixing minor rusty dings with Rust Converter (a liquid that chemically converts rust to primer) and touch-up paint.

I wouldn't admit that to anyone.

I have that or at least something similar from Lamin-X covering the headlight of my motorcycle.

Don't know how useful something like that is AFTER damage to paint. I believe you're supposed to apply that before damage.

37 MPG all day long. Not bad for a 10 yr old car. Since I Uber the high MPG doesn't affect my bottom line as much Wink

If there is rust you have to sand it off. Putting that stick on shield on over rust will make it worse, you will trap moisture and the rust will spread. You can't paint over or cover rust, you have to sand it off. The prep pen showed earlier can get off mild small spots.

How bad is the rust? Can you hand sand it? If you can I can send you some flash primer in a rattle can and some easy instructions on how to use it.

Hey, if the Yaris gets you from point a to point be happily, go for it. As for painting lady parts, I recommend finger paint. Big Grin

Thanks for the offer, but at best I'll probably use the prep pen.

Indeed on both counts. The great thing about the Yaris is it uses Toyota's 1.5L engine and 4 speed auto that has been around forever so it has a ton of lineage and history and is just dead nuts reliable. And the price was right. Big Grin

Repair the stone chips and seal them but I wouldn't bother with the clear bra. They look awful and will highlight any flaws under them. They should really be appled to new or freshly detailed cars with corrected paint.

The good ones are usually a good bit more expensive than those.

It's a 10yr old car, I would just deal with the rust and touch them up.

Corrosion will grow in an anaerobic environment. (If you don't believe me, I'll bust out some screen shots of my 20 year old material science textbook). Do not cover it with anything until you have exposed clean, bare metal.

A Yaris?

Emory board to scuff, clear primer, then quality nail polish

Anyone versed in a mani/pedi be able to give appropriate product recommendations

Too easy not to have fun with. If it gets from point A to B who cares what it is

I’d go 2000 grit to scuff and use touch up paint from dealer
