I have been playing Jeopardy , on line now for 3 months.

when answering I have to make a conscious effort NOT to second guess my answers.

about 89% of the time when actually do second guess , I will get that answer wrong.

The faster I play and choose the answer , the better I do.

Find the answer and choose it, don't even consider the other choices.

but I have to mentally choose to not flip the second guess option, switch.

I was an extremely poor test taker in school ,
especially with multiple choice.

why would a guys noggin seem to want to just start making the test harder , first? , automatically?

why do I have to concentrate on not! choosing and re-choosing and over thinking?

We used to call that being 'anal-retentive'. Then we called it OCD. Now we just call it crazy. Razz

For my business, I must pass many Microsoft tests to procure various certs. It's my experience that I will do the same thing while taking the tests. It bugs the heck out of me.

Maybe it has something to do with the pressure involved in a timed test.

I've learned thru taking "multiple guess" tests to always go with my first answer--don't over-think it.

Through all of the many multiple choice tests taken, I learned to read the question carefully, eliminate the wrong answers, and then go with my first instinct on which was more right.

"Luke, free your mind and trust in the force"

If you've studied the material properly, your mind knows the answer unconciously, you just muck it up when you start second guessing. I used to be able to do my math tests this way. If I just rolled with it and didn't try to think to deeply on it, I could write out some pretty good proofs. I remember college very well when it was quarter beer ladies night on thursday and I always had a calculus exam first thing friday. Aced that test every friday morning more than mildly hungover.

The simple answer is that it is a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Your cognitive style is unique in many respects. There are times with certain individuals that obsessional thinking gets in the way of intuition. Just because you are able to answer Jeopardy questions quickly does not translate into using such an intuitive and somewhat impulsive thought process in other endeavors. Such things as dismantling a bomb should be slow and precise for example. Handling and shooting firearms are in that category as well. If you are truly interested in answering your question there are psychologists that can provide you with answers.

"performance anxiety" is another label invented to describe that very process;

at times I've had similar issues arise.
e
One is the current range-related mystery arise;
I can go practices any given amount on such as 'bowling pins' for example. No pressure, few misses, happy target reaction.

Go the the match, only 6 bullets per string; if you have to reload probably you will be in the single elimination round. Do that again, and you go home.

I've shot paper pin-templates for hours at a time with increasingly good results. Match time comes; something odd happens.

Good luck.

With "Jeopardy" go with your first response.

With multiple choice tests, there are rules for guessing. The ones I taught my students were

Eliminate two possible answers
Select the answer with the best written answer
Select the longest answer
Seclect "C"

There's a lot more to this. Eliminating answers can been done with eliminating outliers (highest and lowest numbers.) eliminating answers with absolute terms (all, never) then it's finding answers that are almost identical and so on. Oddly, answers to questions can be found in other questions.

A book I mentioned in the "what are you reading thread" addresses exactly this subject.

Thinking Fast and Slow attempts to explain the difference between the "fast intuitive" mental process and the "slow considering" one, why they exist, and how to effectively use your two minds to make critical decisions.

It does not, however, attempt to explain the variations of the OP's brain waves, nor how they are expressed on SF!

I learned many years ago in high school that once I made a choice not to go back and change the answer. Most of the time when I changed an answer the second choice was wrong and the first choice was right.
