I found out about two months ago that we have worm snakes in our yard, mostly on one side of the house where it's shaded in the afternoons. They don't seem to grow more than like 6-7" long and they're actually kind of cute for snakes, a lot like a small legless lizard in appearance. We also have a LOT of lizards around here the last 5 years or so, to where I see lizards daily outside and every so often one will get in the house. My wife does NOT know we have snakes in our yard! I think she'd burn the house down. One likes to hide out under the trash can I have beside the house but I haven't seen it the last few weeks. It usually would be hanging out WITH a lizard of similar size, and I just saw the lizard when I took trash out. ________________________

These snake threads make me LOL with all the talk of burning houses and whatnot. Being the proud parents of a beautiful ball python for going on at least 25 years now (we don’t recall exactly when we adopted him), Mrs.BurtonRW and I would probably be tempted to keep such a beautiful snek as a pet. Now spiders… they might have me reaching for the accelerants. -Rob I predict that there will be many suggestions and statements about the law made here, and some of them will be spectacularly wrong. - jhe888 A=A

I’m sorry but pit vipers will receive no quarter and I expect none from them. I’ve seen enough black necrotic skin on bite victims that may or may not lose fingers, toes or part of that limb. They get snake shot before any discussion starts if in the desert. If that’s not available, a shovel works just as effectively. The last rattlesnake I killed was in my back yard in Phx. I let the dog out and it raised its head above the grass that needed to be cut. I YELLED at the dog to come, closed off the doggie door and let the snake have it with the shovel. He probably got disturbed by the road construction when they were installing a sewer or water line on the other side of the green belt. Adios and sucks to be him. -------- After the game, the King and the pawn go into the same box.

Living in Florida you get to see snakes often and learn which are beneficial and which are venomous, both serve the ecosystem here. I’ve had a rat snake fall on my shoulder trimming a palm tree in the front yard, a coral snake crawled between my legs and had to dispatch a cotton mouth that surprised me while weeding. A ton of black racers which are good to have. Couple of ring necks…
