Rensselaer N.Y……local info, where to avoid and where to eat? Login/Join

I’ll be in that area working for several days and am looking for recommendations for decent food and any areas to avoid. Not sure where we are staying yet but that info should be coming soon….I think LT CHEG is from there or knows the area….or anyone else on this great forum.

Rensselaer is a lot like a plurality if not majority of upstate NY cities with the general perception that it’s best days are behind it. It’s a pretty small city with a lot of the same issues as Albany, which is directly across the Hudson River, just on a much smaller scale. It definitely benefits from being in Rensselaer County instead of Albany County in my opinion. The best places to stay in the area of Rensselaer would be in the neighboring Town of East Greenbush. East Greenbush is a really nice place, is geographically larger, and has much more to choose from in terms of hotels and things to do in general. I’m not sure exactly where you’re going to be working in Rensselaer but there are nice, newer hotels in East Greenbush not more than 5 minutes away from Rensselaer. If you don’t mind driving up to about 15 minutes from Rensselaer you’ll have a lot of great choices in places to eat and things to do. Dinosaur BBQ in Troy is a very popular restaurant with good reason. Paolo Lombardi in Wynantskill is another favorite of mine.

Definitely avoid the South end of Albany, or frankly most of Albany really, especially as previously said the South end and parts closest to the river. Other than those parts of Albany there really isn’t a blanket “stay away” type area close to Rensselaer. It will be pretty obvious when you are in a less than desirable area, but those areas are fairly small and well distributed. Hit me up on my email with specifics of what you might want to do and maybe some food preferences and I’ll be happy to offer some good suggestions for you. I think you’ll have no problem getting some great food and having a safe trip, it’s just that most of those things won’t be within the confines of the city of Rensselaer itself, primarily due to its small size.

Cheg is spot on, I’m from the area as well.
Avoid downtown Albany and lower central Ave.

Some good bar food can be had at “My Place” and “Swifty’s” a lot of decent Italian, Mid-Eastern and American food as well.

A good friend owns Alexis Diner, (rt 4) which is a damn good Greek Diner.

The area, while somewhat lack-luster is a fantastic location between the Adirondacks, Boston and NYC.

If you want, open skeet is at Watervliet fish and game, Wed, Fri and Sat mornings.

You'll be safe in most of Rensselaer - pretty easy to recognize the areas to avoid on sight.

Hanzo Japanese Steakhouse is located in a plaza with plenty of parking.

For delicious diner food and fast service in Rensselaer, my go to is Skyline Diner.

For fast food, there is a Chik fil A in Rensselaer that's been open for a while so the lines at the drive through aren't crazy long.

Thank you gentlemen! Always nice to get some local knowledge and I appreciate the info greatly!
Looks like we’ll be at the Marriot in east Greenbush which sounds like a decent area according to my internet invisible friends…again, thank you.
I’ll be working at the Empire Generating power plant for 5 days….its a scheduled shutdown for maintenance working with multiple third party contractors…the contractor I work for is responsible for industrial safety specifically confined space work….easy work until it’s not.

Good choice on hotel, should have no issues there and it’s a 5 minute drive to the plant if it’s the one I’m thinking of. Feel free to hit me up and maybe break bread or grab a drink if we can make it work. If it’s the Marriott right off of I90, you’re also super close to a Recovery Room sports bar which is a pretty good place to grab a beer and watch sports if that’s your thing. Glad we could be of some help and I hope you enjoy your trip. Safe travels!

Nice to know good choice of hotel…..they do take pretty good care of us when we are on the road…each guy gets his own room which is nice!
Would really enjoy a meet up to break bread or a beer, that would be cool as hell! We are working 12 hour shifts…6am to 6 pm so our evenings are usually free and clear. I’ll reach out when I’m up there….17th to the 22nd I think it is….you don’t have an email in profile Cheg….we are FB friends though so maybe there?
