The photos of the animals suffering-burnt are heartbreaking.

I’m usually a bit cavalier about this stuff, but damn.

If you want to help, I can post links to recommendations from a friend of mine who lives in one of the affected areas. (She has been helping ferry supplies for one of the fire brigades.)

If you want to help, here are some organizations, recommended by a friend of mine who lives in one of the affected areas, to which you can send donations.

NSW Rural Fire Service: Support your local brigade

(We chose a brigade local to my friend.)

Australian Red Cross: Help communities recover

WIRES Emergency Fund (animal rescue)

(Unfortunately, that last link now redirects to a Facebook donation campaign. I, personally, won't donate via Facebook as they require sharing information with them I regard as a Bad Idea.)

Is this something new for Australia, or is it a yearly thing like the fires in California and other western states?

It is my understanding that, while brush fires in Australia during the summertime are not uncommon, this season is exceptionally bad. Allegedly on a scale never seen before. They're currently suffering from a trifecta of an extreme heat wave, prolonged drought and high winds.

I read a story this morning that says 186 individuals have been arrested for arson.

That was my first thought too. Did they discontinue the ordinary controlled burns to minimize fuel/underbrush or something?

'Global Warming' must have driven them to commit arson -

Are there a lot of Muslims in Australia?
It only takes a few arsonists to do a lot of damage.

I have friends in Melbourne, but they've not responded to an e-mail I sent asking about them. Not sure the address was current, though.

180+ arsonists. What could possibly motivate them to act without any coordination? What coincidence that so many acted about the same time all over the country. Good thing it’s not a forest in Brazil.....

Constant media coverage.

For example, we see the same thing with mass shootings and other high profile media events. Afterwards, the crazies, copycats, and pranksters come out of the woodworks, and the number of threats skyrocket for a period of time.

Fire is nothing new, it's a major part of Aboriginal culture. The difference is the heat has been more prolonged than normal and the intensity of the fires, something we've seen in CA the last couple of years. Population growth and expansion is factor, with so many people getting arrested for arson, the 'human footprint' continues to grow in areas where human frequency wasn't as common.

I was in the deep northern territories of Australia last year. It was rough, aboriginal land. The aborigines routinely set fires on their lands. If you ask them, many times they will not know why, it's always been that way. Historically, fires were often set to drive wild game out, into the open. It was rather eerie, driving through burning forests. None of the locals seemed concerned.

Seriously though...how do they catch them? How do you catch these arsonists around the county? Was it coordinated?
