I’ll say this much, if I had a truck affected by this situation, I would NOT let them Fix it. Any fix is likely to result in increased fuel consumption and decreased engine longevity. Emission controls more stringent than those in place around say 2002 that also serve to decrease fuel economy are feel good, false economy measures. The amounts that they decrease emissions from properly functioning engines are small enough that the net results from the greater amounts of fuel required to be burnt are almost immeasurable. They don't really say what Cummins did to cheat the system. Most likely just ECM software, I wouldn't let anyone update the ECM if I had one. I know on the bigger engines like the ISX the ECM can be reprogrammed pretty easy and is the most common one I see that has had an emissions delete. All components still in place and hooked up, just not doing anything. Finding a shop that will work on it after it's been modified can be a problem as most don't want to deal with getting hammered with a fine. You usually find out after the rig is in the shop and tore down for something. All I can do is fix whatever issue the engine had and not even hook up to it to check and clear codes, an ECM image gets uploaded to the work order on everything, so I just don't hook up. People buy rigs at an auction with a check engine light and bring them in to see what's going on. The last two were fairly new dump trucks in good shape, both had PACCAR MX-13 engines that had been deleted. Over $60K each to put them back to OEM. | |||

So assuming there's a hardware change that's different from previous. Not a Cummins, but I was looking at the diesel WK2 Grand Cherokees, but everything I read was that the performance & MPG took a dive if they've been 'updated' by the dealer. Similar deal to the Cummins & VW emissions 'scandals'. The Enemy's gate is down. | |||

Used to be a couple of shops around these parts that would take out all of the emissions bullshit for a cost of around $2K. I know a number of people who had it done...wish I had. Nowadays, due to federal fines/penalties, none of them still do it. Ugh. Two VW-related wishes in my life: 1) I wish I'd gotten hold of my friend's Jetta TDI before she traded it. I would not have sent it through the VW "fix." 2) I wish the TDI Passat I have now had not gotten the "fix" (was done before I bought it). I'd be getting about ten mpg more than I do now. (Not that 38 mpg is bad, mind you...) God bless America. | |||

#2, that's what swayed me from looking at diesel WK2s. Forums talking about pretty heavy losses in performance and MPG. And, no one around to improve it anymore, with the massive $$$ fines, per vehicle, the shop 'helps'/tunes. The Enemy's gate is down. | |||
