SuppressedWhere to live near Fort Novosel (formerly Fort Rucker)
My son is finishing Army ROTC and will be commissioned in a few weeks. He was assigned to Army Aviation and will begin training this October. What will be the best housing situation for him at or near Fort Novosel? He has not been there to get the lay of the land and will do that this summer. Is there decent housing near the airfield at which he will train? What area is desirable and where should he definitely avoid?

stoic-oneCongrats to your son!
Rucker has gates that exit into Enterprise and Ozark, AL. Either town isn't bad, it really depends more on neighborhoods than the actual towns. Alternatively, Dothan is just down the road, same neighborhood thing applies.
Are they not going to put him up on base initially?

sourdough44Training in aviation, helicopter pilot? Unmarried? I would just live in base housing, unless it’s not an option for some reason.

Thank you! I do not know about base housing. My inquiry here is the beginning of my research. I imagine it would be available, but I was unsure if it was ideal.

EdmondCheck with the schoolhouse because many times, there will be a block of rooms reserved for student. That is unless he’s already been told off post housing only.

Agree
He should be attending his basic course at Rucker so there should be rooms available on base for him to reside until he completes his schooling. Makes no sense to live off post until he arrives at his permanent duty station which could be anywhere in the world. As a student assigned to the aviation school he should have priority for staying at the BOQ so getting a room on base shouldn't be an issue. In my opinion it will be much better for him to live on base than off base.
