Remarkable sense of smell. These dogs are indispensable for police work.

Commands in German? Oh, I see now. In the description, it says the commands are in Dutch. Impressive.

Sound starts at the 18 second mark

Yep, my female German Shepherd is trained in German, my big male is trained in Dutch and is responding to the commands in the video right now. He spent the first 8 months of his life in the Netherlands.

Sometimes the dog knows what they are doing....in spite of the "handler".

The speed of Max at the 1:00 minute mark when he grabs his toy/training device is just amazing. I can well imagine the same level of energy directed at some miscreants throat!

Our current one is using dutch commands. The previous one (retired and living the good life at home) was trained in Czech.

Most bad guys don’t know how to say let go of my arm, leg, or nuts in European languages. (Great dog by the way).

Apparently Slidell PD gets their Dutch Shepherd K9s from the Netherlands. So it makes sense that they're trained in Dutch.

German Shepherds used to predominate in the K9 world, but working GSD bloodlines have become so inbred that they've ingrained some troublesome genetic health issues.

As a result, most departments have switched to using the Belgian Shepherd (aka Malinois, aka Maligator) or Dutch Shepherd breeds for K9s.

They don't want to spend all the time, money, and effort getting a new GSD up to speed just to have to retire it within a few short years when its joints give out.

It is a shame that dogs don't live longer. Dr. Karen Becker feeds her dogs human food and not the highly processed kibble that is heated to high temperatures.

To maintain operational control of the K9 officer's interactions with a civilian.

With all the YT and similar videos, we are seeing a huge increase in PIT maneuver aversion, and I fear that we may see K9 commands being taught to the gang members as well.

The foreign language, when not simply the mother tongue of those who train the dog, had more to do with the frequency with which we use the English analogues in everyday conversation. Count the number of times you say "no" in your next phone call. It's a lot and your dog, always listening, isn't as sharp in responding when you mean it.

When my dog hears the word "nein," he knows I mean it. I never say his name unless I want his attention. My other commands are in English because that's most natural to me, but I could be better served if I moved to another language.

As far as some perp yelling a command in a different language with the expectation he can avoid or release a bite, well, I want to see that video. It's going to be a hit.

Yep. My GSD was imported from outside of Frankfurt. Ze Germans have very strict breeding protocol (line breeding) and they must be Schutzhund titled. Americans have bred them bigger and heavier, which fucks their joints up, mainly hips and hip dysplasia. Americans have ruined lots of breeds but you can still find solid breeders here. They’ll import the Sires and Dams from Europe, then do their own line breeding here.

Have a Mal nowadays. Going forward either Mal or Dutchie. They are not pets.

A vet once commented that my Bassett Hound has the nicest, shiniest coat he'd ever seen. He was floored when he was told she ate mostly table scraps.

On a side note, am I remembering correctly that gun dogs are sent out in a way similar to when you pretend to throw a ball to prank a dog, only with a prop gun?
