There was a point when I was using the Xfinity box that turning off their network was possible. Then they changed the firmware so that option was no longer available. Maybe the business version is different.

the more devices you have connected via WiFi the slower they will be depending on your AP 2x2 or 4x4 mimo. How much WiFi channel interference? If you are running a VPN that will slow them down I get 900+ down on a wired connection I get 500 down on WiFi from a wired AP (with 1 device connected) Put a mesh jump into it the same device gets 150-175 down ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Live today as if it may be your last and learn today as if you will live forever

Dunno, but, when I last got a service and modem upgrade I told them if they couldn't lease me a CM that allowed me to turn it off the thing would find itself located on the floor in a corner of the basement inside a grounded Faraday cage Told 'em we used our WiFi network extensively and 2.4GHz was already polluted. I didn't need any more WiFi signals cluttering-up the band even more. "America is at that awkward stage. Are you getting 1200-1400 mbps 'to' the modem, or 'from' the modem/router? As in your PC connected via ethernet cable (CAT 5e or better)? I really didn't mean your own private Wi-Fi network, but they make it so that your gateway does broadcast some sort of public guest access. So you can turn that off? Good

I'm a bit late to the party, but wanted to add something. Deep within the setting of your "router" (or WAP), there is a setting for "bandwidth" and the choices are probably 20 MHz or 40 Mhz. what is that set to? By theory, the wider bandwidth would be optimal for those in an "ideal" location with no nearly interferers and few obstacles in the way. But due to several factors, the lower bandwidth may be better. Point is, whatever the setting is, try the other one and see if it helps. If you have an Andriod Phone, then download the wifi analyzer tool and see what's out there in terms of interference from neighbors, etc. I use this tool to figure out which wifi channel to use in my area. Depending on the router, you may be able to set the transmit power for it. Set it to the max, which is normally 20 to 23 dBm, depending. not all routers have this option. (note: I use the term 'router' but you know what I mean. It may be a WAP to some ) That said, I generally try to use an ethernet cable instead, and have spent a ton of time wiring my house for such. I only use wifi when I'm forced into it, like the the ipads and phones. Otherwise I could do without it. YMMV. .

That is the speed xfinity claims on their app when they check to my modem. I only use wifi and with my new iPhone 15 and my other xfinity modem (they swapped it out when they were out working on my connection problems) I got over 1200 mbps to my phone standing 12 feet from the modem in direct line of sight. Now with the swapped modem I'm getting half that max (sometimes it's as low as 100). I'm waiting unt I've got some time and I'm going to get the modem swapped first. I was really just wondering if I bought a router that plugged into the modem with cat 5, if I'd get better wifi speeds.

I suggested on the first page and radioman suggested above checking the settings of your current xfinity all-in-one box (it has a modem, router, and wireless access point built into one box). What do you have? XB7, XB8? Your going to have to go into those settings should you decided to use hook up a different wireless access point or router/wireless access point anyway, so you might as well take a look at them now. If you go use your own box path, xfinity will not set it up for you. “I was really just wondering if I bought a router that plugged into the modem with cat 5, if I'd get better wifi speeds.” Nobody answered that question because you are clearly not getting the speeds your current equipment is capable of. Until that issue gets resolved, your question cannot be answered intelligently.

I don't see any way of accessing those settings through the Xfinity app, that's why I haven't checked them. If you've got xfinity and know how to access them then please share. When I had my own router I could access them. But I've got cable plus a phone line and I don't want to spend $300 plus to buy my own modem and router. It's obvious that it's possible to get 1200 on wifi since I did at one point, so I assume it's an issue with their modem/router. I'm just not versed on mesh systems so I thought one might help increase my wifi speeds.

I believe you’ll need use your browser to get into those settings. You can use Safari on your iPhone as long as the phone is connected to your WiFi. Type 10.0.0.1 into the search bar and hit enter. The default username is admin and the default password is password. This should bring you to the administrative GUI for your xfinity box where there’s a whole range of settings you can change. Your looking for wireless settings and under those there should be channel bandwidth settings for both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Also check what wireless standard is being used for both bands. You’ll also want to check what WiFi mode is being used. My xfinity box changed itself to 802.11n once. You want 802.11ax. If these ability to change these options or even see these options is grayed out, the Comcast in it’s infinite wisdom has decided you are not worthy of controlling your network. They pulled this with me years ago which is why I have my own cable modem and WAPs. If you find the settings on your xfinity box are wrong and you can’t change them, but you can at least turn the WiFi radios off within your xfinity box’s settings, then you can plug your own WAPs in without much effort.

Thank you, I had no idea I could access that. I'll mess around in there and check things out.

What client device are you using for your testing? iphone, Android, laptop, other? I ask because on many client devices you can dig into the wifi settings and see the "link speed" between the phone (or laptop) to the router (WAP). I haven't been able to find this info on an iPhone, but Andriods seem to have it. Most routers (WAPs) show this information too, once you get into the right menu. Once you find it, what is this link speed between your actual router (WAP) and client device? is it at least 1,200 Mbps?? If not then you will never get to your ISP speed of 1200 Mbps mentioned in the first post. Wasn't asked before but I assume the 300 Mbps number that you are seeing is from some site like speedtest.net ?? .

I would verify your connection and protocols. This can be done very easily with a Wi-Fi analyzer app. Also in your analysis you must differentiate in an "Internet Speed Test" and a "Connection Speed to the AP". Make sure your Wi-Fi AP (within the modem/router or add-on AP, whatever is used) is connected to 5GHZ band and using Wi-Fi 6 (or 6e) 802.11AX. THEN do the same for the client (phone.etc). Pretty simple but if the tech is too complicated maybe find an IT guy in your area. Just swapping something out without knowing what your are doing is just a guess and will never truly solve your problem.

I finally fixed my problem - I got rid of Xfinitys modem/router. I purchased a Netgear modem (CM2050V) and Netgear router (AX5400) and am getting 935 mbps download and 42 upload on wifi with my iPhone 15. Xfinity makes it near impossible to talk to a human, I can't stand them but there are few options for Internet. it took about 20 minutes of using their stupid app to get to a human to install my new modem. I was on the phone with someone from India for about 25 minutes getting it activated. At least I am no longer paying $30 a month to rent their equipment.

1. Turn everything off and then restart it. 2. If that doesn’t fix it, you’re powering stuff up in the wrong order and need to redo. Keep doing this until all combos have been tried. Do not forget your stove, clocks, etc. Clocks MUST display correct time BEFORE powering on next item. 3. If that doesn’t correct the issue, you need to to power down in a specific order then power up in the specific and correct order as specified in step 2 above. 4. If this still doesn’t fix it, please call back between 0900 and 0915 to make an appointment. Time zone is TBD. [/comcast service representative help desk customer directions] Life moves pretty fast. Yep, the most abysmal service I've ever encountered. The US should punish their enemies by making them use Concast/Xfinity for a 100 years. I actually think it's a good form of torture. I was dreading having to try and reach a customer service person to activate my modem. Their automated system runs you in an infinite loop of useless info in order to avoid speaking to a human.

Pro tip: tell them you want to cancel the service. That put me right through to a person, who transfered me to another person, who got a tech out the next day. That tech brought a longer ladder than the first one, replaced more squirrel chewed wire, and my dad hasn't had a problem since.
