No, I mean if one ear of corn is done in three minutes in the microwave using the method that Jim Shugart posted (
https://sigforum.com/eve/forum...960095224#3960095224), how long should it take for two ears?
More than three minutes, but less than double. Maybe 4 1/2?
Is there a rule of thumb for extending microwave time for two of the same type things?

Jim ShugartI suspect that the time should be roughly proportional to the mass of the food. I'd try 6 minutes for two ears.

Flash-LBBeen using a microwave since the very first ones in the 1970s.
Don't double the time if you want to eat it, increase it by 50%.

Jimbo54I go 4 min per ear. 2=8 min. Works great with our microwave.
Jim

That's a great question. I admit I had to look the answer up, but microwaves work on a curve. That's because the item you're cooking doesn't absorb 100% of the radiation the oven is putting out. It receives a fraction of the total output.
Put a second identical item to double the mass, it will intercept a portion of the energy that would have gone into the first item, but again not half the total oven output.
The actual function changes with the specific food item, since different materials absorb energy at different rates. Some are somewhat close to linear, so maybe you can get away with simply doubling the time. As a general starting point, however, it is recommended to increase in increments of about 50%, just as you've done.
So for your example,
1 ear of corn = 3 minutes
2 ears = 4-1/2 m
3 ears = 6-3/4 m
etc.
Thank you for asking this. Something I've always wondered about, but never took the time to find the answer.

Jim ShugartIt was leaving Chicago because it was afraid of getting popped.
