Help refresh my and our memory, please. I know some of you know a lot about this...

I'm referring to things like (made-up example follows...): "90% of all self defense shootings in the US since 1956 have occurred within 17ft, and an average of 3rds were fired, and it took at least two rounds to stop 75% of the attacker(s), and 9mm was used 66% of the time, and most happened at night and within 5mi of home, between 11pm and 2am, out of 1700 shootings in 32 states...", etc.

What do we *know*, and from whom, and all that? How good or bad is the data collection, still, and all that? What don't/can't we know? What myths should be busted? What useful walking-around knowledge is there in whatever good data is out there?

Similarly, the same about LE shootings is also interesting and relevant, obviously.

Hit us with some facts and statistics and sources and quality analysis... save the bubba-isms for the gun store and deer camp, let's stick to official sources and such, Gov't data, court cases, everything we "know", however incomplete, etc.

When I was the Firearms Instructor for my PD, I would get a yearly report from the NYPD on their shootings. IIRC, it went by the name SOP 9. I also got a similar report that was compiled with national data by the FBI. I dont know if the average person has access to these reports or if they are still being done.
I know of no accurate comprehensive sources of non LE shootings.

Very little reliable data. If it comes from the MSM, its not to be relied upon. They taint everything with their political bias. If they make a statement, you can be pretty sure its about the opposite of the truth.

I'd expect to see that the number of one shot self defense shootings have decreased over they years. Time was, almost no one carried a firearm for self defense. Now way too many aggressors are becoming wary of their victims can be expected to be armed. Kind of lead to the current situation in the inner cities of hold ups becoming shoot outs. Pretty unhealthy, for both parties and all of us sitting in our living rooms. The only positive thing is they can't shoot for shit.

Especially in civilian encounters there is little comprehensive data collection.
There may be a few scientists working on these things like Gary Kleck who I believe is university of Florida

A couple known points:
Civilians are involved in more self defense shootings than police

Many civilian confrontations e d without a shot being fired

Risk mitigation ( don’t travel in bad neighborhoods after dark, don’t hang out with criminals, etc) will greatly reduce your risks overall

Tom Givens of 'Rangemaster' keeps track of all the shootings his students have been involved in with details he gleans. It's on his website still I believe but I haven't looked for awhile.

His universe is small, about 50 as I recall but it's pretty personal stuff.
