Dash Cam suction cup fail on windshield glass Login/Join

As the title says my dash cam suction cup will not stay in place on the windshield. I normally moisten the cup area with water and clean the glass. It sticks okay but it will normally release in about a week.

Anyone have a suggestion how to improve the holding power of the suction cup? Any other liquid that I can use to increase the holding power?

Sounds gross, but try this: Wipe the sides of your nose with your finger then wipe your suction cup. The oils from your skin improve the suction cups seal.

Is suction cup your only alternative?

The reason I ask:
  • I never had good luck with suction cups for anything on car windshield
  • I'm on my 2nd dash cam (different brands) and both times I've used the 2-sided 3M tape to attach a bracket to my windshield. My unit slides into the bracket.

In my opinion, suction cups on windshields tend to block vital viewing areas. My friend has a mirror-mounted camera that has a great field of view and doesn't block a thing.

When I had a radar detector, about once a year I had to boil the suction cup in water for 5 minutes. It worked every time.

Our GPS suction cup does the same thing, we keep talking about getting a flat cradle but never get around to it.

My dashcam is also attached using the 3M double-sided tape, no issues.

I was under the impression that anything made of plastic , that spends that much time in direct sunlight , would be deteriating , and would require replacement. So I used double faced tape, on my dash cam.

No matter how good the suction cup is, over time it will fail. More often in the summer in the high heat.

If you want a permanent solution, I can't recommend BlendMount enough. Add a mirrortap for hardwired power and you have a really buttoned up solution that will not fail.

RAM makes a mirror mount that goes between the mirror and the button on the windshield. Comes with a variety of adjustable brackets to use.

    1. Warm the suction cup up with hot water before putting it on. A soft suction cup seals better.

    2. Put the suction cup on at the hottest part of the day. That way as the air cools the suction is increased.

    I had the same issue.

I believe my dash cam came with a sticky and suction cup mount. I used 3M dual lock velcro on the mount and also attached a piece to the windshield. This way the dash cam can be removed easily.
