My wife and I like to go on cruises.
Several years ago cruise lines started to ban plastic straws.
At the same time they have no problem with plastic cups, plastic lids, plastic forks, knifes and spoons.
The reasoning is, they did not want the straws to end up in the ocean as tho the cruise lines dump their trash at sea, they don't.

When my wife would use the paper straws she would go through several because they would start to fall apart, how good is that for the environment, think of all the trees.

Solution, she buys a giant bag of plastic disposable straws and we bring it on the cruise. When she gets a drink with a paper straw in it she throws out the paper straw and uses he plastic straw, problem solved.

Make no mistake. YOU are the carbon they want to reduce.

While on vacation in the Outer Banks years ago my father gave our waiter hell for not having plastic straws. The waiter said something like “they are bad for sea turtles” to which my father replied “what!? Sea turtles don’t drink from straws. Why would you think they do that?”

It was funny and uncomfortable at the same time. I think he only pushed back on her so hard because she was so enthusiastic about them not having plastic straws. As if she was helping save the world.

I’m not surprised the paper ones are toxic. Lots of the stuff the moronic left champions is toxic and actually not any better for the environment.

Great example of making the situation worse while convincing everyone you were making it better.

This reminds me of the grocery bag debate. Older members... sorry, more experienced members... will remember back when grocery bags were all paper. Then they came out with plastic to save the planet from the evil lumberjacks who were laying waste to our precious trees and would eventually clear cut the planet and we'd all die from lack of oxygen, just so you could get your groceries home. The solution... plastic!! No need to kill trees and they can be recycled.

This was really a brilliant marketing campaign by the plastic industry. Turns out, paper bags were and could always be recycled when most of these plastic bags really cannot. Even recycling companies won't accept plastic bags. So we replaced a product that used a renewable source could be easily recycled, and was biodegradable (anyone who had a leaky container in one knows this), with a product based on fossil fuels that is loaded with chemicals and will last forever. Suckered again....

On the rare occasion that I actually need a straw, I refuse to use a paper straw. Therefore when traveling, I always carry plastic straws in my carry-on bag.

Any issues with them getting bent or messed up in your bag?

We have lots of plastic straws at home. Now that the toxicity of the paper straw idea is coming to light I am much more receptive to carrying my own plastic straw.

Never. I use that plastic case (from the dentist) and just pack it in a way that they've never been damaged. Those "Trump" straws have been in there for years and still look brand new.

My sister jumped on the no plastic straw band wagon pretty hard. Every Christmas you'd get a different type of folding or collapsing stainless steel straw to carry with you and use.

I admit, some of them are really cool but I've never used one except to test it.

I don't use straws, the wife does and refuses to use paper ones. We pack her reusable ones wherever we go, some are metal and some are silicone

Yea, darthfuster! Whenever a waitress gives me a straw of any kind, I say no thank you I'm an adult I can drink right out of the glass.

Yeah, that's all good, but many times I've received a glass of water, ice tea, whatever and the waiter is gripping the glass with his/her grimy hands right at the rim. Fingerprints all over the glass. Yeah, no thanks. I'll use a straw in those cases. But you do you.

I use straws in restaurants for similar reasons, and it allows you to drink the coldest beverage as that sits at the bottom.

Wanna have a little fun? Next time you order a cup of coffee in a restaurant wait until they set it down in front of you, then ask if you can have a straw. Better yet, if a friend orders coffee, ask the server for a straw for them

If you really want to throw them off, order a steak and ask for a straw.
