Basic Construction Materials Cost “Poll”
“Poll” is in quotes because I just came from the lumber yard (so I have a receipt in my hand) and was curious if those of you, not in the trades, have an idea what materials cost.

I bought 3 sheets of 1/2” CDX plywood. CDX is “construction grade,” or standard grade plywood.

I’ll provide several choices in a $15 price range for a single sheet of the plywood described above.

If you know EXACTLY what a sheet of 1/2” CDX costs, go ahead and choose the correct answer, I’ll ask you not to spoil the poll with a written response. Please.Guess what a single sheet of 1/2” CDX plywood costs.$16 - $30$31 - $45$46 - $60$61 - $75$76 - $90

Now are we talking true 1/2 or the new 15/32…

Lumber is insane right now.

Around here a lumber yard's CDX plywood is more expensive than the big box stores. On top of that some of them charge more if you use a credit card to pay for it.

I suppose, but I try to spend my dollars locally whenever possible

I've been waiting over a week for Home Depot here locally to even receive some 3/4" finish grade poplar plywood for some cabinets I need to build, just so I can pay ~$67 a sheet for it. I remember a few years ago buying this same plywood and griping about having to pay $48 a sheet for it.

There is a small builder on You Tube called Kens Karpentry based in northeast Vermont. Mostly builds garages and barns. He has documented over the past two years on a weekly basis what he pays for material and the challenge of getting it. Big issue that comes up is trying to cost out a project and how long he can keep the quoted price to the customer.

The struggle is real.

Yeah, I like him and watch. Not too long ago he posted a video where he foresaw and bought a LOT of lumber and supplies and stockpiled them under his control to help the prospective customers and make it easier for them to pay for it. Win Win for him and the customers.

Yes, I bet he wished had a bigger barn and budget to stockpile even more.

I enjoy watching his videos, very down to earth.

Its been about a month since I last checked plywood prices. I have held off on a few projects due to the prices and I need 3/4” plywood.

Kinda figured it was going to be right in there. The latest price I've seen on 3/4" was $98/sheet.

When I finished off the inside of my shop in 2018 I used 1/2" for the sheathing. At that time it was right around $25/sheet.

Ridiculous.

I'm a cabinetmaker and paid $192 dollars a sheet for 3/4 white oak, last year it was $85.

I spoke with a local contractor here

He's booked nine months out
He can't believe it or understand it.
" It's like people are finding gold in their back yard"
He said.
He said that four years ago everyone was getting loans for home improvement ,
Now the majority are just paying cash.

I know what it costs here but as always, price varies depending on location. We carry a Brazilian hardwood plywood called Sumauma (I think that’s the correct spelling) and it’s remained fairly reasonable. It’s $31 for a full sheet of 1/2” and $45 for 3/4. Beautiful wood and you can stain it to look like most anything. A cabinet maker saw it, asked me to verify the price was correct and when I told him it was right he bought all we had. A sheet of oak is almost $100.

Went to Lowes today to pick up some materials for my new hen house/chicken coop build.

2x4 studs? $9.78! Eek

Used to get 'em for a buck and a half. Of course, that was back in the pre-Clinton days when logging was still allowed.

here in Oregon where timber is everywhere and they have been pulling 500 truck loads a day out of the mckenzie fire, (lots of old growth) the price of lumber is crazy, but if your selling logs it's terrible. most all sawmills have log decks larger than I have ever seen just makes zero sense.

I needed some 2X4s for a project. Lowes wanted about $9 a stud. I noticed a house being remodeled about 1/4 mile north of me that had a big dumpster out front. I stopped and asked. They gave me about 10 used studs. All I had to do was pull or saw off the nails.
