Trump to announce Heather Nauert as pick for UN Ambassador Friday, sources tell Fox News

President Trump will tweet Friday morning that he is nominating State Department Spokeswoman Heather Nauert to be the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, replacing outgoing official Nikki Haley, multiple sources tell Fox News.

Back in October, Nauert, a former Fox News host, was believed to be a "leading contender" for the position, sources familiar with the selection process said at the time.

Haley unexpectedly announced her resignation in October and promised to serve in her role through the end of 2018. At the time, she described her time in the position as a "blessing," but offered no reason for leaving except a belief that government officials must know "when it’s time to step aside."

In her resignation letter, she also dismissed the possibility of running in the 2020 election.

"I expect to continue to speak out from time to time on important public policy matters, but I will surely not be a candidate for any office in 2020," she wrote. "As a private citizen, I look forward to supporting your re-election as President, and supporting the policies that will continue to move our great country toward even greater heights."

Trump praised Haley as a being a "fantastic person" who did "an incredible job" in the role.

Nauert was named as the State Department spokeswoman in April 2017.

I've always liked her. Looking forward for her to carry on in the same manner as Nikki.

I will reserve judgement. She was a journalist who became a State Department spokesman. I don't see anything in her background that qualifies her to be UN Ambassador. Other than perhaps staying at a Holiday Inn Express last night, I am not sure what experience she has that prepares her for the second highest diplomatic post in the country. The confirmation hearing will b e enlightening.

On a fun note, she used to take my spinning classes when I coached in NYC around 2000-2001. She's a tiny thing.

I liked her on Fox and Friends, thought the snippets of press conferences she conducted at State showed she could organize thoughts and counter-punch as well as anybody. But,

... she is a far cry from Jeanne Kirkpatrick, whom would be my ideal template for the next UN Ambassador/Ambassadress.

She's loyal to the administration and has proven to be a bulldog at the State Department. I don't think it gets too much more complicated than that.

well, I think maybe it is

granted she will have a large staff of professionals to wade through the day to day, but from an experience standpoint its one thing to run a press conference, and quite another to sit across the table from a career diplomat and expect to be on an even playing field

Of course the job requires more qualifications than just that which I can only assume she meets many of them. My point was that for Trump, all other things being relatively equal (or close to it), proven loyalty and a fighter's attitude make all the difference.

You give the "Career Diplomat" way to much credit.

I've talked to people who seemed to think "Diplomats" get some kind of special training.

Is that true? If so, that's something I didn't know about her.

I want her to say to all the folks who do not respect the US:
No more foreign aid. No more money. No more American lives wasted propping up your shitty country.
And she should be able to diplomatically explain the ordnance load of a B-52 so they are not ignorant when it gets dropped on them.

Those who says she's not qualified for the job must think President Trump was not for his, right? He had zero experience as a politician. He was just a reality TV star, a businessman. What the heck does he know about government, about running a country. Should have bowed out and let the scum politicians run the swamp as usual. Right?

Cite, please? Being even marginally conversational in 27 languages would be quite some feat.

I suspect that she has gained some bit of experience standing at Pompeo's side during his tenure, but I've just got a feeling that this might be Trump's Harriet Miers moment.

They're going to come at her with every single thing they've got. Hopefully she'll do well, as I've always been rather fond of her, but I wouldn't wish that confirmation process on anyone.

When people talk about qualifications for being U.N. Ambassador, look at Susan Rice & Samantha Powers...for all their hyped qualifications, we had the following happen under their watch:

• genocides
  
• chemical weapons used
  
• thousands killed in Syria/Iraq - ISIS
  
• slavery reintroduced in Libya
  
• Russia invaded Crimea & eastern Ukraine
  

She’s as qualified to be an ambassador just as much as the political appointees who get ambasador jobs based on fund raising abilities, or being friends of the powers that be. Full disclosue: 26 years in the DoS and retiring from the senior executive service, I can honestly say that there are very few “career diplomats” other than John Bolton who impressed me during my tenure. Most are get along, go along sycophants.
