Funny you should ask. It's heavy cardboard. I did have an aluminum pole, but it is anodized black. (I know...not quite as much strength-to-weight ratio.)

Actually, I wonder if anyone can figure out what the pole is really for. All the clues are in the photo. (E.g. note the brand new desklamp.)
