One of the oldest troops west of the Mississippi, Warrenton, MO Troop 22 has been continuously chartered since 1912.

After 113 years due to a dwindling number of Scouts it was determined that disbanding was the only option. Of the 5 remaining boys it seems like 2 or maybe 3 will attempt to continue on by joining another nearby troop.

As an Eagle Scout I am sad to see this but not surprised. With all the changes in scouting last few years added to the changing demands for youth attention hours. Hopefully those boys can find a troop.

Trail Life is growing and was formed in response to the Boy Scouts no longer being the Boy Scouts. Christian based but they really focus on building well rounded men.

Eagle Scout here too. I could see this coming with the first unprincipled woke move.

Some good news we will be chartering a brand new Cub Scout pack at one of our elementary schools, signing the paperwork tomorrow. We've received wonderful support from the school and the local community is behind it.

Baden Powell is rolling in his grave! So very unfortunate that your Troop is dissolving after all those years. Former Scout Master here.

I agree. A hundred and thirteen years is quite a run! Good luck to the boys who transfer and carry on.

I'm curious now, how many Eagle Scouts there are among the SIGforum group.

God bless America.

I'm sorry... that's sad.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

I was heavily involved in Cub Scouts for both my boys, who were in it from Kindergarten to 5th grade. Both chose not to go into Boy Scouts.

Many on here will blame "Woke Scouts", but I think the problem is all volunteer orgs. It has less to do with wokeness and more to do with parent laziness. It was like pulling teeth to get parental involvement.

In my case, my boys weren't interested in doing it any longer.

The national organization had absolutely zero influence over what we did at the Pack/Troop level.

Myself and my six brothers are Eagle Scouts. Our mother was awarded the Silver Beaver award for her service.

Combination of factors the “woke scouts thing certainly influences it, but there is more.
I don’t think the relatively recent legal issues with claims of sexual assault helped either.

I remember back in the day as a scout ( got to life not eagle myself) lots of fathers helped. Our troop had a good 6 or so fathers who came on our trips to corral the boys.

Talk it to a friend who was involved in scouting with his grandson, the demands/ requirements to be an adult volunteer are pretty onerous, with mandatory trainings mostly related to sexual misconduct, they now have a 2 adult rule stating no single adult can go anywhere with a scout. If half the top wants to go on a hike and the other half has another activity planned, and you only have 3 adults, one of those activities can’t go forward
I understand why they have implemented a lot of this but it just makes it that much harder to involve adult volunteers when it is hard to get them in the first place.

I had to fold our Troop which had been in existence for 43 years, in 2022. I was down to five Scouts, including my son. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.

We weren’t alone, though. Another troop was also absorbed at the same time into the Troop we joined. I remember thinking that first meeting looked like the survivors of a shattered infantry company being folded into a fresh company. A lot of long faces.

Upside, of the five I brought over, three have either Eagled or are getting ready to. New crossovers are pouring in. So there is a future.

I did Cub Scouts. When it was time for Boy Scouts I was done. None of my friends were there so it wasn’t much fun. Same reason I gave up wrestling.

Amusing story about becoming an Eagle Scout. I started at the usual age. By the time I turned 14 I had all but one of the required merit badges and enough of the elective badges to get my Eagle award. I had done enough of the camping and other requirements that all that was necessary for advancement to the next rank was to wait the required time. Essentially, all I needed was time, one merit badge and my Eagle project at 14.

Piece of cake, right? Well, then girls became more of a focus. Later, I got my driver license and started dating in earnest. Then high school sports, jazz band, marching band, orchestra, weekend and summer jobs, proms, homecomings and Sadie Hawkins dances, skiing, basketball, baseball….. until I realized I was two months away from my 18th birthday. Well, my mom reminded me. It takes weeks to plan, organize and get approved an Eagle project. Then execution and reporting the project is needed. Not to mention the one remaining required merit badge. Don’t forget school to graduate.

I did manage to get my Eagle rank with a week to spare. The court of honor happened after my 18th birthday. Graduation happened a month later. Summer in the Rocky Mountains and then off to college. How did I survive my teens? Too busy to get into trouble. All thanks and honor to my parents and various leaders, scouting and religious, for guiding me through. I never could have gotten off the ground without them.

I’m dealing with exactly this right now. I chewed my son’s ass last week because I told him not to sign up for theater because it would interfere with his Eagle project. He did anyway and now is having trouble planning his work days because of you guessed it, theater.

He turns 18 on May 8. There’s a reason they call them “Midnight Eagles”.

If it’s any consolation, none of my four boys got anywhere beyond first class. It just wasn’t a priority to them and no amount of encouragement would change that.

I quit at Tenderfoot when we moved across the country.
Started at Tiger with my son and helped him get to Eagle. He now at 35 has his own troop.

Scouts have changed with the times. It's not 1950 anymore. The pulls for boys time go far beyond "girls and cars". I was opposed to letting girls in. That ship sailed long ago. Scouting is still a great organization.

Sorry about your troop Frank. There are lots of ones that are surviving and pressing on. If we are to ever have grandchildren (doubtful that will ever happen), I would be more than willing to put the time in again should their parents be unable, to to see any of them succeed in Scouting.

So there is a future.

They have been busy today after school. They've been researching and reaching out to other Troops in the area. Several have already invited them to visit, and I think we have 4 different opportunities starting tomorrow through Saturday.

The boys have expressed an interest in sticking together, so they're planning on checking out the other options and deciding amongst themselves where they'd like to go as a group.
