My best friend from college reached out about buying a gun. He has finally come to a point where he feels it is necessary to own them.

Can anyone help me to direct him to a trust worthy gun shop near ashville NC to help him with getting his permits and purchasing?

I am giving him a crash course over the phone but he really needs someone to show him hands on. I would like to give him some options of where to go for his first purchase.

He will need a pistol purchase permit for the sheriff in the county he resides before he can purchase any handgun in NC.....

Some sheriffs do it instant, some give a five to seven day waiting period, some require several affidavits from other peopl in the community....

For a long gun, he can go to the store and get a shotgun or rifle, but they will also run a NICS check...no waiting period- unless he gets “hold” on his NICS check.

I thought NC was a free state?

Funny. My pussyhat mom, just asked me same question.

She ended up with G4 17.

Unless you already have a Concealed Weapon License/Permit....you gotta have a Pistol Purchase Permit, issued by the local sheriff

Then they utilize the CCW as a PIstol Purchase Permit. And waive the NICS check (but that depends on the FFL-he can always call it in)

Dang, that's news to me. I assumed NC was similar or less restricting than VA.

Hope he can get what he needs.

On Target is perfect as he can rent a gun to find what he is comfortable with before purchase.

I'm in Asheville and can highly recommend On Target. They are family owned and run by great people, have good prices, will take the time to help you. They also have an on-site gun range and lots of rentals. I highly recommend he visit On Target.

Your friend wants to get moving on the paperwork with the Sheriff. They have been flooded with applications. The statute has a time period within which the sheriff must act (issue or deny the permit).

I suggest they purchase additional permits. Permits are $5 each and good for 5 years. Saves the hassle of getting a permit in the future if they want a second handgun or if they want to trade the one they purchase.

It really is a good idea to start the paperwork, then you can get a total of three permits.

Hi guys, thanks for the reply's.

I'm gonna try to get him registered here, the wealth of knowledge has helped all of us at one point or another.

He has started his purhase permit already, I think 10 days ago.

I recommended to him to buy an AR, a Pistol and a Shotgun. I think he is going to buy them in that order. He's not sold on ccw yet, but we all know its just a matter of time on that once he purchases a gun.

I will direct him to On Target, If any of you need the referral let me know I'll be sure to have him mention your names.

Thanks again.

Send him to visit Paul Harrel on you tube, he has put up some really good videos for the first time gunbuyer. Also, lucky gunner has a really good shotgun video for the new gun owner.

Tell him to use their range and rent several pistols/guns in the meantime and practice and also get to know what type of gun he likes best before purchasing. I'd recommend the pistol first as it's the most versatile as far as can use it for home protection, can carry it in the car more easily etc.
