I thought that was something most people learned in high school hence the reason for a rag can with a lid

Do kids even take wood/metal/auto shop in high school anymore where they would learn this?

It's the "organic" plant vs "fossil based" oils that are the concern.

We learned this in the USAF (A&P/Aviation General) in the history portion as the many "organic" oils, dopes, paints, varnishes were all made of the compounds subject to rapid polymerization and exothermic reaction in the presence of oxygen.

Also, "fine grade steel wool" was to always be kept in sealed can for the same reasons, as high humidity, damp or oily wool can spontaneously compost.

Although fossil POL are not such a hazard, they are "contributing" to degree of fire, and one may not know if an oily rag is "organic" or "fossil", so everything goes in a rag can.

Ironic that the same cans were painted red and used for "butt cans" (cigarettes) and often in the same location next to each other in the tool crib near the door and many a time, things ended up in the wrong can...

I've used a lot of linseed oil and a lot of Rubio the past couple of years. I always put all rage into a container of water as soon as I'm finished.

I use boiled linseed oil all the time. Oil-soaked rags go to the outdoor fire pit and are lit immediately. Learned that from Grampa and never questioned it.

Since you asked, this is the high school I went to:

Looks like they've moved beyond teaching rags in a bucket.

Unlikely. I was on high school in the 1990s and they had already done away with shop classes at that point.

"Tech theater" was the closest thing we had, which was building and painting theater sets. So quasi wood shop.

If it wasn't for auto shop in high school, I would have never learned how to bandage a knuckle. Big Grin

Interesting for sure and although we've all heard about it, it's interesting to see the experiment.

Why didn't he use metal garbage cans and fill them with water after they caught fire?

Saw that yesterday. Scary stuff. I always heeded the warnings to dispose of rags soaked in boiled linseed oil safely.
