Mattress choices are very personal. Like others, I did research on YouTube, various websites and Consumer Reports. There is a lot of conflicting info out there, and some mattress review sites are financially supported by certain mattress companies. We have the Costco Novaform (don't remember which model) and Tuft & Needle. We like them both. We actually just bought a second Tuft & Needle for a third bedroom. My parents have one of the more expensive Tempur Pedic kings. It feels great for the short time I tried it but it's way out of the price range I want to pay for a mattress. Most of these newer foam mattress companies have a free trial policy. Look hard at what you're expected to do with the mattress if you decide you don't like it. Some companies just tell you to donate it. Some arrange free removal from your home. Tuft & Needle, Casper and Leesa all have very easy refund policies, as I'm sure do many others. If you order from a third-party like Amazon, you'll likely get the same free trial but you may have more of a hassle if you don't like the mattress and want it removed for free. I'd order directly from the maker if you go the online route. 十人十色

I bought a Leesa last January & it was a LOT harder to get back in the box than it was to get out & I had to pay Amazon 26$ to ship it back (see bob's post above mine) My wife lasted about 3 seconds before going to the spare bed, I made it 1 night. I wanted to let it break in, but it was just too uncomfortable to sleep on. I thought I liked firm mattresses, but we bought a much softer than expected Simmons & have liked it since June.

Who else? |
I went to a furniture closeout store, buying typical furniture. The sales guy there is a character. Mentioned I was contemplating a Tempurpedic for thousands. He laughed. Showed me some off brand no-name memory foam queen mattress for $300. $350 with 'cool gel'. I bit. Typical 'bed in a box'. Opened, expanded, placed in bed frame. There is heaven on earth. $350 is what it cost. 20 minutes down, I'm asleep. Wake up in the same position. There is no tossing and turning, no heat (I'm in AZ). Does all the Tempurpedic does for a whole lot less money. It is holding up quite well; and even if it failed today, I'd have to buy 2-3 more to catch up to the Chumperpedic price.

We went with a Leesa due to that as well, I like a year later....my wife says it hurts her back...but she's not totally sure it's the mattress or being stressedand out of shape For $1000 (king size) it was a good deal.

I will never again pay 2k for a freaking mattress. However this is something inside of me that will not let me buy a mattress without trying it first. I cant make that kind of commitment online.

We love our Lull, came in a smallish box at 96 pounds for a King. 100 days to decide. They pick it up and they box it. Ships back at no cost. Had it since February

Been happy with my Purple

Staring back from the abyss |
I had a Purple as well and was really happy with it. My back loved it. However, after I injured my shoulder, it was too uncomfortable for me to be on my side on the Purple (a bit too firm), so I sent it back. The return is indeed an ordeal. There was no way to get it rolled back up like it came, so I rolled it best I could and tied it up with nylon straps. My local UPS guy agreed to pick it up like that and they took care of the packaging. I'm not sure what they did in that regard, but it did end up getting back from whence it came. For those getting these mattresses with the 90-100 day refunds, make sure you get them from the manufacturers and NOT Amazon. Amazon will only honor their 30 day refund, not the manufacturers. I was finally able to get mine at around 80 days from them, but it was a royal PITA. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Chip away the stone |
This is a fair point about the Leesa. I can't say how it compares to other foam mattresses, but mine was firmer than what I was used to from my traditional mattress. I felt that might not be a bad thing, partly because I figured the deeper you sink, the more likely you are to get too warm. I stuck with it, and whether it was a matter of me getting used to it, or it getting broken in, or both, I'm completely comfortable and happy with it now.

Get my pies outta the oven! |
Thanks for all the recommendations! I'm going to definitely check out Tuft & Needle as well as Costco's current offerings. What is all this "sleeping hot" you guys speak of? I'm always cold in bed, I have a comforter on the bed year-round!

Fighting the good fight |
Memory foam mattresses retain body heat more than traditional mattresses. There have been various attempts by the different manufacturers to address this, including layers of "cooling gel"/latex/mesh/etc., but most people will notice that a foam bed is hotter than their previous bed. Since you're always cold in bed, that may not be a bad thing.
