I’m mostly through reading (first time) the Old Testament. I’ve formed a high level picture of the history of the Jewish people descendants of Abraham and the region of the Promised Land up to about the time of Jesus.

It occurs to me that I have no idea what happens to the Jewish people (where do they go, how did they become ethnically diverse) and the region (who occupies, what are the boundaries, etc) between the fall to the Romans and the current modern status.

What’s a good source of history to get an overview? I don’t need to understand deep details. But would like to get a sense of what happens to the people and to the region from, say, 1 AD to now.

I'd start with the very readable but also very brief (~250 pages) "A Short History of the Jewish People" by Dr. Raymond Scheindlin, which manages to cover the history of the Jewish people and their migrations from ancient Egypt to the end of the 20th Century, and then if there are specific periods/topics within Jewish history that grab your attention in that you can dive into those individually.

As for the region, while I don't know of a good overview from the Romans to modern times as premodern Middle East history isn't really one of my interests, I can recommend "A Peace To End All Peace" by David Fromkin for the modern history from late Ottoman Empire rule through their breakup at the end of WW1 and the subsequent British/French takeover of the Middle East and mostly arbitrary subdivisions that eventually led to the establishment of Israel and the modern fractious Middle East political situation.

Followed by "O Jerusalem" by Lapierre and Collins for an fast-paced overview of the history of the founding of Israel, combined with a deeper dive into the 1948 battle for Jerusalem specifically.
