Knowing is Half the Battle |
A close friend of ours is becoming a Lt. Col. in the Air Force June 4th, probably in a ceremony on the Mighty Mo. Flights are massively cheap obviously, plus there is the option to change flights. We are looking at Oahu June 3rd-8th or so an then to Kauai to the 12th. We've been to Oahu twice before, the wife has been to Kauai twice for work, but this would be the first for me and our 3 kids ages 2, 6 and 8 by then. What say ye? Too early in the Pandemic? It looks like Hawaii just implemented 30 day lockdown and they seem to be a week behind Iowa's progress, and we are to April 13th.

3 months out? I get your concern having just canceled a trip of my own. But that’s just a silly question at this point in time. You only have integrity once. - imprezaguy02

If you can cancel later with no penalties if these lockdowns continue, I would go in a heartbeat. ——————————————— The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Psalm 14:1

Well, if we're going in June I should probably buy the tickets now...

^^^This. If refunds are available where you have no $$$ at risk, I'd say book it and see where things go from here. ----------------------------- Guns are awesome because they shoot solid lead freedom. Our kids school just got cancelled until April 20th so we’ll still be in school in June to make up time. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. Ours are not having to make up the time. We've been "homeschooling" in the morning, I think they've been learning more at home.

Price trip insurance first. If that's still reasonable then pull the trigger. _____________________ Be careful what you tolerate. You are teaching people how to treat you.

One of the things that will possibly come out of all this is the fact that schooling from K-12 has mostly been baby sitting so parents could work. I firmly believe what I learned and retained in those 13 years could have been taught in 2 or 3 at the most. Point being I would not worry about if school is going to be going on in June... just take them out and go. My Native American Name: "Runs with Scissors"

My wife is in Maui as I write this. Our daughter is (was) a barista and her husband is (was) a sous chef for a major resort in Lahaina. Her coffee shop and his restaurant have been shut down until further notice. Fuck, they just bought a house. Right now this is a crazy time to go. Not sure if things will calm down by June. Your call but I would delay the trip if possible.

My personal opinion is so much ( not all mind you) of the panic is based on reactions due to lay media hysteria. The cycle of noteworthy news related to a single event is so quick in about 10 days another crisis will take the front page and the hysteria will fade quickly. By June this will be ancient history

Agreed. We have a friend that bought round tickets earlier this week from Orlando to Hawaii (not sure which airport) for $325. I think that was for May, which earlier this week, May was supposed to be fine. Now, who knows?

Steve, you've got mail. I just forwarded a TPG newsletter about flights, etc.

Don't Panic |
Yeah, if you set up the reservations so you can cancel at the last minute without penalty, I don't see a downside. I would suggest you book directly with the hotel/airline, though. The intermediaries (Travelocity, etc.) have their own twisted rules on refunds.

Well I pulled the trigger and bought tickets last night directly through American, $2,300 for 5 travelers going in (HNL) and coming out (LIH) of two different airports for our preferred one stop shortest duration flights is a rare occurrence, basically $3,000 off. The tickets can be changed up to the last minute and have credit through June 2021. I'm crossing my fingers, but I think this whole thing will blow over by then. I looked at the travel insurance, only coverage is if you contract COVID-19 WHILE ON the vacation, it was maybe 10% of the cost of the airfare, so I didn't bother.

This! My daughter works for one of the big travel sites and is amazed (OK down right ticked) that people are making non refundable reservations without trip insurance. “ The work of destruction is quick, easy and exhilarating; the work of creation is slow, laborious and dull.
