Flying between Maui and the Big Island is easy and cheap. I would focus on the Hilo side where volcano National park is. But it’s the wet side, and Volcano the wettest. In lived on Maui, loved it. I’d go with 80 Maui 20 BI. BTW do go to Kamuela (Waimea) to see Parker Ranch. _________________________ “Remember, remember the fifth of November!"

One base. Interisland transfers by aircraft. Visit all four. - - - - - 34 years ago we did this tour... Oahu ... Magnum PI, Pearl Harbor Maui ... Old Lahaina Luau (now burned) Hawaii ... Dole plantation, horses Kauai ... garden walk, drive around "highway" On our trip, we changed locations, thinking this would be best. In retrospect, we would have one base, cheapest, and transit to other islands from there. ------- Trying to simplify my life...

Six days is a really short time to visit one island let alone more than one. Maybe consider extending the trip and visiting 1 or 2 islands. Personally I would now choose the big island and Kauai. Semper Fidelis

Huh? An afternoon on the big island showed me that I didn't care for it. Six days? That was akin to torture. And, yes, I circumnavigated the whole island. Not for me. I'd go back, but only to Oahu and Kauai. ________________________________________________________ It is long past time for a Convention of States. Everyone is different. I wouldn’t go to Oahu if it was free. And I don’t pay for flights to/from the mainland. Only Hawaiian Airlines between islands do I have to pay. I’ve got family on Maui and can go anytime I want. They have people on the North Shore of Oahu but I just stay in Maui or go to Kauai. Oahu is smaller than Maui but has 1 million population. Maui is a bigger island and has 165-170k population. Big Island is so big you could fit all the other islands within it, and it has a 200k population. A lot of people love it because of the land, and spacing. I know some people in Hilo and I like that side a lot and could spend weeks there but Maui is No ka ʻoi. Torture to me is going to any island and being in the rental car driving around most of the trip. Locals will tell you, spend 1/2 your time doing nothing, relaxing. Get in the water, take her easy. I would say the same. I can have fun there on any island but I’m in the water most of the week and relaxing. Surfing, SUP, snorkeling, or just swimming and relaxing at the beach. Not driving around in a damn car all week. I can do that at home and save pictures off the internet better than I could take. It’s an island, any of them, in the middle of the Pacific. You should be going to get in the water. It’s really clean salt water unless there is a ton of Haole tourists that aren’t wearing reef safe sunscreen. They use the Coppertone or whatever, and you feel that filth in the water. What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

I have only been to Maui and spent a full week there. It took the entire week to truly see all sections of the island and enjoy them. The island has so many different ecosystems it is amazing. I broke sections of the island for each day. One of the best experiences of my life; mostly because it was a trip with my mom after going through pure cancer hell and this was a trip for mother and son. NRA Benefactor Life Member

Except for Pearl Harbor Oahu is a waste. Rude people, lots of hustling even off Hotel Street and overprised hotels. Reminds me of Times Square in the 70s. The Big Island has the volcanoes of course, good deep sea fishing and nice people. Maui is ok but massively ovecrowded. Watch out if they have a Hurricane they know very little about them, .

Thanks for all the thoughts! Current thinking is flying from SFO to Kona with a noonish arrival and then staying in the Kona area for 2 nights to do some of the things over on that side... Then shifting over to Hilo for 3 nights to do the National Park and hiking and waterfalls. Then off to Maui and staying in Kihei for 5 nights. Our kids are great in car rides so 1.5 half each way on a day trip really isn't a big deal but it does seem a shame to waste that time in a car multiple days when perhaps it is more efficient to move to the Hilo side. Then when we get to Maui we do a bit slower of a pace than on BI.... that's my thought anyway. I currently don't have a big list potential activities we want to hit except: - beach time with easy beach-entry snorkeling - some hiking, preferably with significant 'jungle/rain forrest' vibes - waterfall(s) - both National Parks Food isn't a big motivator for us... and certainly won't seek out what we call "fancy' restaurants, especially not with kids. Heck, I often only eat once a day now anyway. Costco for groceries and meals at the condo, or a basic no frills plate lunch from some dive sounds great for the most part. I don't remember being overly taken with the food on Kauai when we were there. So, 5 nights on each, how's that sound? I think I can do that, though it pushes the budget a bit. It just seems much more efficient to do it this way as the flights to/from the islands is truly half the cost of the trip in general, so why not only pay that once?

You need to set your expectations for pace, Big Island will be slower paced, full stop. You'll seem a real asshole (and have a worse time) if you're trying to rush things there. Also no Costco Hilo side. _____________________________________________ Proverbs 3:31 "Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways."

Two Islands are easily done, the air travel between them makes it Easy. We did Oahu and Maui, you only lose a few hours of travel so do it late in the day or early AM so you don't lose a day in the air travel. We never get hotel rooms, instead look for VBRO and get a condo, you'll have multiple bedrooms, baths a full kitchen and in our case an outdoor grill. We spent the money for food at the local Safeway/Supermarket, fresh fish, beer, etc. Also, there were reports that rental cars were outrageous, something like $3K for a week. Couple of guys that went bought a used car for $900, drove it all week and gave it away to charity.

^^^^^^^^^^^ Money grubbing people renting cars. Although we reserved a car they rented it out for more money. They gave us a ride to our hotel arriving three hours later after a long plane ride. I had to make a scene to get our money back. That was 25 years ago and you do not forget stuff like that.
