Mom called early morning yesterday. Local ambulance company was there because she fell. They got her back in her chair and said for her to not go to the hospital. Confused I asked her to reconsider and ask to go. They were telling her to not bother because they'll just send her to her doctor. Why that's bad, I have no idea but she ended up just staying at home. I had to wait an hour to get my son on the bus and then I went over and got her breakfast and stuck around for a few minutes. She said she felt dizzy when she fell. Said she felt better after having breakfast and I let her rest.

I went over at noon again to get her lunch ready, she ate a few things and her speech was labored and unclear, I had her call her doctor, she was having trouble with remembering words and they suggested she go to the ER.

A different ambulance company was dispatched and I waited to talk to them and get mom on the meat wagon. They couldn't figure why the other ambulance wouldn't take her.

After 4 hours in the ER she finally called and said they are transporting her to UPMC Presbyterian Montefiore. Her temperature was up and they said she had a bladder infection. When she got there they put her in surgery because it wasn't a bladder infection, it was a soft tissue infection and they had to remove the infection. She's scheduled for another surgery tonight to check the area and to make sure it hasn't spread.

Turns out, it was a good thing she fell because she'd have never known she was infected and she could have succumbed to the infection with lots of suffering.

I called tonight and she sounds better than yesterday but still not herself.

Prayers up, friends.

Interesting that they didn’t want to transport the first time.

Sounds like you caught it in time.

Glad to hear she is finally getting some medical care. Infections in older people can come on quickly and could leave them confused which is really bad due to some living alone and not noticing a difference.

First, sorry to learn about the situation.
Second, glad that your mom appears to be getting competent medical help. Pray she recovers soon.
Third, are you doing anything about the refusal of the first EMT team refusing to take her to a hospital?

I truly believe that UPMC is a really good system.

Thanks for the prayers. She had a good night. I won't be able to visit due to the covid policies.
