https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/399424 Due to Turkish military airstrikes in northeastern Syria, access to water and electricity was cut off for over a million residents. The significance of this disconnection is critical as the area is known to be drought-stricken. From 2019 to 2024, Turkey carried out over 100 attacks on oil fields, power stations, and gas facilities in the Kurdish-controlled areas of northern and eastern Syria. These attacks have worsened the humanitarian crisis in the area, as in the last four years, drought has worsened due to climate change. Turkey defended itself by claiming the target was to harm "sources of income and capabilities" of "Kurdish terrorist groups." Turkey further claimed they are aware of the drought and what they believe has worsened it is "mismanagement of infrastructure." The official Turkish military statement said they attacked targets of the Kurdish insurgents, the PKK, the People's Protection Units (YPG), and the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD). _________________________ "Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it." Optimistic Cynic |
Turkey is after the Kurds, not Arabs. Iraq, Iran, and Azerbaijan also have it in for the Kurds. Based on the character of the few Kurds I have known, I am firmly on their side in this centuries-old conflict. Among their other sins the Kurds respect individual and community differences in religion rather than enforcing adherence to a specific Islamic sect even though Islam is the most prevalent religion among them, some are even Christians. As far as US foreign policy goes, a Kurdistan nation could be as useful an ally to us as Israel, but that would be a third rail that few politician would want to grab. I remember a time when Turkey was thought to be a friend of the West, that time has passed.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should |
Hardly a recent development and another reason for us to stay out as much as possible. Yet another unsolvable (by outsiders anyway) conflict in that region. Turkey has never really been any sort of ally except in the mind of some diplomats but they do occupy some key real estate. Location, location, location. They've been making good use of it for centuries. ___________________________ Avoid buying ChiCom/CCP products whenever possible.
