Please give your daughter my thanks for her service. Her choice speaks volumes about her character and upbringing.

Wishing her the best, my son did his basic there. He said the only thing he can offer is tell her to run often and don't go out during free time, continue to train.

Wow, things must have really changed.

What is this "free time" he speaks of?

He said a bunch of people went out the weekend before graduation and all got busted for stupid stuff and didn’t graduate. When my son left for basic, he was a scrawny kid. After basic, he was a beast! Then they made him lose some weight for jump school.

Congratulations and good luck to her! I was B 4/13 there July to September 1992. There was no “free time”, and I’m sure some guys still have the scars from burns from punitive push-ups on the asphalt.

Thank her for her service.

I'm not up on current policies, but when I did AFROTC in college (1955-1960) we had to go to a summer encampment of 14 weeks, which was sort of like a Basic Training. I did mine at Selfridge AFB outside Detroit. We did not have much "free time" but were given July 4th off and I took some of my mates home to celebrate my sister's birthday (4 July). Then it was back to the grind.

I don' know. The only "free time" I had was sundays when we got to scrub the floor while the other guys went to their various religious services or during lights out when you could chose to sleep or do laundry.

Maybe he is referring to AIT.

Why do they call it “relaxin’ Jackson”? Big Grin

That nickname came after I was there in 1991, because in '91 it was considered one of the toughest and strictest training posts in the entire Army.

When I got on a bus and was taken to the other side of post for AIT, it in many ways was like going through Basic Training again with job training lumped in, that's how we were treated. Other AIT posts, you could start wearing civvies and growing your hair, at Fort Jackson you had that head shaved like Day One in Basic and no civilian clothes ever. Drill Sergeants just like Basic. Had to march EVERYWHERE, got the shit PT'd out of us. hell, I lost more weight in AIT than in Basic.

They were calling it ‘relaxing’ back in 1982 when I went to infantry school. Benning didn’t have a reception station, so we started at Jackson.

And thank you for raising such a fine daughter. Best of luck to her.
