GustoferAdios Direct TV
I'm tired of you ass raping my bank acccount without even having the common courtesy of a reach-around. I'm also tired of 837 channels with nothing worth watching, 150 movie channels with nothing but woke BS or shitty 80s movies that we've all seen 37 times.
It ain't worth it. All streaming now for about 1/3 of the price and I'm much happier. Of course, if the internet goes down I'm kind of screwed, but I guess that's why the good Lord invented books.

tatortoddI was paying $110+ per month for cable in 2017. A lot of the monthly fees came from the mandatory box rental.
I bought Roku boxes and switched to Hulu+ for $35 per month. Roku boxes paid for themselves in 5 months. I've upgraded by Roku boxes once to get 4k and one of the boxes was needing daily reboots.
The bitch of it is Hulu+ has gone up every year, but has really gone up since Disney bought them (it's now $89 per month). If it had followed inflation it'd only be $46.26. Part of the increase is they made Disney+ a mandatory part of package which I've never watched and likely never will.
If I didn't like live sports, I could save a lot of money. However, I like watching football and baseball. I'm a Big Ten football fan so Big Ten network is one of my must haves.
Disney bought Fubo and is merging with Hulu so there is one less competitor out there for live sports.

220-9erLot's of other options nowadays, depending on what you want to see.
We ditched them years ago and don't miss it at all.

StorminNorminI switched to DirctTv Stream several years ago and was so glad I did. No more dish, no more receiver rentals, I have unlimited recordings, and can watch from anywhere. Now they are owned by AT&T. AT&T is who I am not happy with recently. They are financially raping me. I have all my cell phones through them, my home internet, and DirectTv. They just recently increased the prices on everyone of those and then add the price increases of every premium channel. It is getting out of control.

Right there with ya, man.
Come springtime, though, Hulu may get the boot. (’Til fall… ugh.)

RogueJSKGood.
In the year of our lord 2025, there is zero point in spending $150-$200+ per month for traditional satellite/cable TV, just to let some east/west coast programming manager dictate to you what you're going to watch at any given time
and have to watch commercials along with it.
I've been 100% streaming since 2015ish, and I watch what I want to watch, with no commercials. I currently pay around $59/month for it:
$25/month for Netflix (no ads)
$18/month for Hulu+Disney bundle (no ads)
$16/month for Amazon Prime Video (no ads) - though that comes with a bunch of other Amazon-related perks too, not just video streaming
I will then throughout the year occasionally pony up for a month at a time of stuff like HBO, Paramount, MGM, Starz, or Apple, when there's a couple specific movies and a season or two of specific shows on one of these services that I want to watch. I'll watch it for a month, then cancel until next time.
If you're on the fence, also note that the next week or so is the perfect time of year to cut the cord, as most of the streaming services will have Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals with greatly discounted subscriptions.

ZSMICHAELEvery Saturday in the fall is COLLEGE Football and its traditions. I bet most of you are not aware why Notre Dame plays Navy ever year. It goes back to World War Two. Notre Dame was having financial problems, Navy bailed them out by placing the V12 program on campus. It was decided at that time they would play every year. As a show of respect the teams sing the Alma Mater of both school no matter who wins.
I spend considerable time on my computer trying to find the games I want to watch.
After football season I read books. I got a copy of Senator Kennedy{of LA} and am hoping that it is worth it.

GustoferI get ESPN on Apple TV for like $10/mo during the fall to watch my games and then cancel it until September. They carry pretty much every game, even FCS ones.

ZSMICHAELThanks for the tip. College football particularly the SEC has lots of juicy drama. Governor Landry of LA is involved in picking the next LSU coach. I am glad he has time for that. Brian Kelley is trying to cash in on his 53 million dollar buyout and Coach Oregeron is angling for the LSU job. {Orgeron sounds just like Slingblade}

sourdough44I haven’t paid for anything in decades, besides internet. I do have the roof antenna, Roku stick.
There are a lot of free apps too, like Tubi, Hulu, many have a free or level with commercials.
I’m not real wedded to any particular TV watching, that helps too.

ZSMICHAELWhen I lived in rural Wisconsin we got one station out of Madison. Somehow we got by. Lots of fishing, reading and outdoor activities. No such thing as bottled water.

darthfusterI think I cut the cable in 2010. Of the hundreds of channels in our bundle, we only watched 7. I didn’t like the programming on the kid channels with their subtle progressive messages and cultural rot. So we left cable television for good. Now I pay for YouTube Red, Amazon Prime and Netflix. Netflix is on the chopping block though. They cross me one more time and off with their heads…..so to speak. YouTube is like 10.00 a month. Amazon Prime is about the same. No commercials is where I reside.

PASigI honestly don't know how traditional sat and cable TV is even making it now with the advent of YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV and all the other internet-based TV offerings especially with how much they cost versus these new alternatives.

We were basically forced into Direct in 2020 at a place we were renting. It was combined with our internet via ATT. ATT got the bill right (price they promised) exactly once in the year (contract) that we had them. ATT is incompetent and dishonest at every opportunity. I absolutely loathe them.

I cut Direct TV loose way back in 2009 or 2010 because they reneged on a monthly subscription discount and charged me a higher rate. Never really liked them when I had their programming and never missed them when I let them go.

In Montana, there are two major ISP’s. Spectrum is the MSO (Multiservice Operator, IE cable company), Qwest is the LEC.
I did the same as you, almost 3 years ago and did the disco with Dish Network. They kept raising the base, required, package which I don’t watch. Only the local channels in a storm, or inclement weather. I had satellite for all the movie channels. Once my bill got over $100 I had to disco. So what I did was get a 2nd ISP as a consolation prize to myself. My fiber rarely goes down, and when it does, it’s carrier maintenance. I have a Dual WAN router. I have to use the router app, and manually switch it over to my backup ISP during maintenance. If there is an outage it it will automatically switch on its own.
I have rural land and it’s the same there. I do have fiber at the curb but the backup ISP will be Starlink. Once you lose your redundancy (satellite/ISP), if you can get it for a decent price, backup ISP is a good thing to have. It’s the same as having a generator in case of power outages.
What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone
November 20, 2025, 02:00 PM
GustoferWe have but one ISP in my area. They
are fiber now, so the likelihood of a major outage is pretty slim.
