Vexillologists & those who love political geography and the flags it produces, what are some of your favorite flags?
Ever since taking a political geography class in college I have had a fascination with flags. My professor managed to take a subject I was already interested in and presented the material in such a fascinating manner that to this day I occasionally look at flags and read up on their history just for fun.

These are a few flags I think look pretty neat.

While researching why Germany’s nation soccer team wears white jerseys I came across this answer:
According to the book entitled “All the Colors of Football” by Sergio Salvi and Alessandro Savorelli, the Mannschaft wear white because the German Football Federation was founded in 1900 when white was the national color of the country between 1867 and 1918 as in the former flag of the German Empire Prussia.

From an aesthetic perspective it’s a pretty cool looking flag.

While looking at that flag and researching it I came across this one (the Holy Roman Empire flag I believe) and a VERY interesting modern interpretation of it.

This is a fricking cool looking spin off.

Hong Kong is also a country that has had very neat looking flags. Politics aside I like the post 1997 flag more from a visual perspective. To me it’s a neat looking flag.

The Flag of Mozambique is another one of my favorites. The AK47 has triggered people and they have made attempts to remove it but I believe the rifle is still on their flag.

This is my all time favorite flag.

What are some of your favorite flags or flags you find interesting?

I wouldn't consider it good-looking, but Ohio certainly has a distinctive state flag, which is cool in its own way. IMO, Canada has the best-looking national flag.

I started to get into flags but the descriptions quickly went over my head and I lost interest. I think it was flags and heraldry. "Sinister this" and I forget the rest of the terminology I came across.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Internationally? I don’t know. U.S. states, Wyoming’s and Arizona’s. New Mexico is pretty cool too.

I'm a bit interested in flag design, but mostly as a part of an interest in design in general.

This is an interesting TED talk I saw on YouTube a while ago about the terrible design of many city flags. It makes some good points and is pretty funny.

It basically boils down to saying that you should be able to see what the flag is from far away, so don't put a bunch of stuff on it and don't write anything on it. In many ways it is not dissimilar to logo design, if we exclude logotypes (where the logo is text of the name/initials/whatever of the company).

Here are a few more of my favorites

Of all the state flags this one is near the top for me.

This one is lovely too.

I can’t believe I forgot to mention possibly one of the best flags ever made in my original post.

I really like the modern grenade/meme version too

And the other variant is delightful as well.

Another beautiful flag I like that probably pisses off any worthless Chinese communist dipshits if they ever lurk here. Cool

One of the coolest flags from our revolutionary war period.

And lastly a flag with a beautiful message and ok graphic design. The design could be better.

Interesting design. Illuminati like. What’s the background?

I got interested in vexillology through my interest in numismatics, as many of the oldest coins origins could only be determined through the heraldic coats-of-arms on them.

Vexillology follows the same rules (or should) for display as are used in heraldry. No colors on colors (blue on red, etc.); no metals on metals (white/silver on yellow/gold); no words, only graphic charges (stars, flora, animals, etc. and then in a distinctive coloring difference from field).

My hometown had one of the best designed flags, as it was simple but told the history of Louisville’s founding.

Louisville (Falls of the Ohio River) was founded in 1778, and named after King Louis XVI of France, for the help provided during the American Revolution. The white 13 Stars (Betsy Ross circle) and the gold 3 Fleur-de-Lis of royal France on a Union blue field.

After metro merger in 2002, we got a corporate logo for a flag.

The Brittany flag. From the area of France where my wife is from. It, not surprisingly, was modeled after our own American flag due to its strong symbolism of Freedom. People in Brittany are very independent. In fact, they will usually identify themselves has Bretagne first and French second. If you ever watch the Tour de France, you'll see this flag flown quite frequently by spectators.

This is one of the flags seeing a bit of a resurgence in the tuner car and motorcycle racing scenes. Though there are MANY people who harbor a lot of anger towards the flag.

Even a professional motorcycle Grand Prix racer had a helmet with the rising sun flag on it. My grandfathers (USN & Merchant Marine during WWII) held the flag in contempt but it’s history does predate WWII by quite a long time. Some would argue its history is forever tied to a certain period of Japanese history. From a design and aesthetic standpoint it is a highly recognizable and very unique flag.

What sticks out more than the flag in this pic is...WHY THE F does that Miata have a BMW badge on its hood? Is that person just trying to troll the world?

French rider Johann Zarco’s Rising Sun helmet.

Another unique flag is one I discovered because of a German friend from Bevergern Germany. This is the flag/symbol of his home town. Yes that is a Beaver on the flag. Big Grin
