I think I detect a story. Some years back we had a thread on "negligent discharges". It went several pages w/ poster accounts. Luckily, the 4-5 main rules of gun safety saved us, as intended.

We had a rookie shoot him self in the leg cleaning a Glock. We didn’t issue him a Glock. It was his personally owned weapon he had for years before he became a cop. Went thru his thigh meat. No bone or arteries struck. 40S&W hp. Left a good scar the size of a quarter on entry and exit points. He was out of work for a month. Nonsense. We collect or attempt to collect insurance information on every patient we transport. And their primary and secondary insurance gets billed until all options are exhausted. The patient may get a bill for anything not paid by their insurer. Most medicare recipients will never see an invoice. In my county for 911 calls, we have an ambulance operations tax. The ambulance companies agree to not bill patients for anything in return for a portion of that tax based on their coverage area. If they have insurance, they accept that as payment in full. If they have no insurance, the patient still gets no bill. Transfers to another hospital, facility or back home are another story Air transport may or may not be covered and there are usually limits. There is actually now statute that a patient or their family must be informed of the potential cost prior to air transfer from a hospital and offered the option of ground transport if medically possible. Many of us in the Burning Man community (or back country hunters or those participating in wilderness activities) will purchase a medivac policy that will cover any costs not picked up by regular health insurance. We are at least 45 minutes by ground from a level 2 trauma center. Closer to an hour to a level 1. Fire departments in my county fly trauma patients all the time. And medics who make poor patient assessments in regards to air transport can and do get called in to speak to our medical control director regarding why they didn't use ground transport. Finally, Michigan is unique in that we have the option of "unlimited" medical on your car insurance. If it's a patient from an MVA, they or their family is not getting a bill for being flown or going in my ambulance ...period. __________________________ Writing the next chapter that I've been looking forward to.

I know this well. The last gunshot wound I transported was just this situation. Young man was cleaning his pistol, missed the step on cleaning his weapon and put a round through his left calf. He unfortunately hit bone as the X-ray showed. No exit wound. He knew he was wrong, he was so mad at himself the whole way to the hospital. And I know you guys are going to ask…Walther CCP. Or, my favorite, "the gun went off." Use of passive voice to imply the person involved is blameless. 'I was doing ABC when the gun just went off.' Yeah, right. We all make mistakes. I won't jump on the bandwagon casting aspersions on the guy. It may be true - in order to disassemble a Glock, one must first pull the trigger. If one is careless, it would be easy to forget to clear the weapon first. . . Fear God and Dread Nought Admiral of the Fleet Sir Jacky Fisher

Medicare covered my ambulance ride to the hospital, when I broke my hip after missing a step getting out of the cargo area of my delivery trip. Ambulance, ER, surgery, week in hospital, month and a half in residential rehab, all completely covered with zero charge to me. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

I agree with this. My own ND was shameful enough (I put a 9mm through my closet wall, through the shelf supports, across our playroom and into the drywall on the other side - I was extremely lucky nobody was on that side of the house; it served as a huge wake up call that with familiarity comes relaxation where there shouldn't be any). At the gun club, I got into the habit of pointing an empty gun at the backstop and pulling the trigger before holstering it. Good habit. I was startled once when I did this and the empty gun went "bang!" הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

Ignored facts still exist |
anyone remember the defensive shotgun days when you would dry fire on an empty chamber so all you had to do was pump the shotgun to chamber a load when the need would arise? Been 30 years and maybe I'm forgetting the details, but that always seemed risky to me. I just remember the dry firing and then loading the tube mag. .

It hasn't. But it definitely removes any chance of pity from me when they shoot themselves while handling weapons under the influence.
Yeah, and I never did this, nor do I teach my guys to do it. Verify the chamber is empty, safety on, load the tube and put it in the rack. It takes less than a second to actuate the action lock button...and this drastically reduces the chances of somebody sending a round through the roof or the wall when prepping the shotgun for storage.

I have been dealing with guns since I was 11 years old. First one was a single shot Winchester.22, that put a lot of meat on our household table. I am now 84 and have been dealing with guns the whole time, including 11+ years in the Army. Never had an accident with one. I would not call that luck as my dad was very strict about dealing with guns and I learned quickly what not to do with one.
