Nephew-in-law shot himself cleaning a gun.
He apparently said “I couldn’t see the shell in the gun”. Roll Eyes

I haven’t talked to him and don’t know what gun or any other details of how it happened.

Through and through below the knee, he was extremely lucky. Ambulance ride to the local Hospital then life flighted to a Nashville hospital. No bone or other vital bits were hit. They were concerned with a blood clot, didn’t close the wounds and sent him home after about 24 hours.

Funny, they would not let his wife ride in the ambulance with him… guess they had to consider the shot could have arisen from a domestic issue. I expect he will get an interview by a LEO in the near future if he hasn't already.

Word is he is complaining of a lot of pain, well, stupid should hurt they say...
Is that too harsh? I suppose it could happen to anyone but I'll just add he better hope they don't drug test him. Perhaps he learned a lesson, or maybe he needs glasses so he can "see the shell" next time. Big Grin

Endeavor to persevere.

Ouch on the fact he was hurt, AND, he will be forever embarrassed as well.

I'll be that guy

OP: Your nephew is an idiot and should not be handling or owning guns of any kind. Roll Eyes

There is ZERO REASON you should EVER, EVER "shoot yourself accidentally" while cleaning a gun.

That’s one way to learn… Had a gun instructor drop his pants right in the middle of class to show where he’d blown the inside of his thigh out when he was 17 years old w/ a 45. Left him looking at his femoral artery. Eek

Some things you should never forget. I would also change my post about the “blood” test. Wink

I'll be that guy too...

What kind of gun?

I know, I know, it doesn't matter, but wondering nonetheless.

I suspect that most people who claim to have shot themselves while cleaning their gun were actually fucking around with it and had a ND.

I doubt that there is anyone on this forum, who did something stupid but luckily survived. People make mistakes, and learn from them. Most likely he will never, ever make such a stupid mistake again.

He's lucky however, there's a process when cleaning guns, gotta stick to that process or, learn better.

I agree.
I'll pull the slide back numerous times and look in the chamber on pistols. Rifles get cycled a bunch of times also and chambers looked at.
There might be that very rare instance that an ejector broke but that's the point of looking in the chamber to make sure.

Not too harsh at all. Especially with the bolded portion in mind. If he's using illegal drugs, he's got no business owning or handling a gun.

Hope he's ok and doesn't have a lot of physical damage to his leg.

This is why I don't clean my guns. Big Grin I kid, of course.
But what Shugart said is the first thing I thought.

Long long ago… Grandparents knew someone who’d killed his wife while “cleaning his rifle“. Got away with it too.

My thoughts. I don’t even get the “while cleaning my gun” thing. Maybe “I was about to clean my gun” or “ I had just finished cleaning my gun”. But you can’t really be cleaning a gun with a cartridge in the chamber, or the slide on the frame for that matter.

What are these people cleaning? Polishing the front flat surface of the trigger?!?

"Cleaning". Roll Eyes

Why do they always lie and say they were cleaning it.

I think a lot of "cleaning my gun" is hiding things like practicing my draw, or spinning my gun like Johnny Ringo, with a loaded gun.

Less embarrassing saying I was cleaning my gun and screwed up.

An idiot acquaintance of mine threw a loaded Glock into a backpack with a bunch of other stuff. Arriving home, He threw the backpack onto the floor.
Bang! Killed him. Eek
At least he was not "cleaning" it.

I hope the young man is OK and that he has learned a terribly important lesson. As far as "stones".... I think that I'll let others throw those.
