Got Rear Ended Today
Sitting at a red light and watching the light then big bada boom. I wasn't sure what happened at first it took a couple seconds to realize I got hit. 45 mph zone and the guy said he was playing with his radio and never saw me, never hit the brakes. My glasses flew off and my spare tire was up under his truck, My back end is pretty mangled and the bed hit the cab, I'll get it to the collision shop tomorrow and see what the damage is it just sucks that my resale value will take a good hit even after it's fixed. Most importantly just a little banged up, a little whiplash and a little shaken up, it was my first ever.

Tundra Tough, I drove her home and I'll drive it down to the body shop tomorrow. The Ram that hit me was leaving on a flatbed.

Most importantly you escaped without injures. Thank goodness. Depending on the year of your truck, my bet is it ends up totaled. That sort of damage is very expensive and involved to repair.

Why I like to keep an eye on the rear view mirror. I don't always, but try to.

Mine's a 2015. I usually keep an eye on the mirror but I knew the light was getting close to changing. I don't think I would have gotten clear if I saw him coming but I might have lessened the impact .

How frustrating. Glad you are OK. One real advantage of driving a large vehicle.

When you deal with their insurance company (or yours if it is uninsured motorist coverage), try to recover for your truck's diminished value.

Not a bad idea to check with your doctor if you have continued soft tissue / whiplash pain or reduced range of motion.

Glad you’re okay. Hope the whiplash is a quick recovery.

I know most Tacoma’s I see on Tacomaworld that are hit that hard (hard enough for the bed to hit the cab) are usually a total loss. While it may still be drivable, it may not be affordable to repair in the eyes if the insurance company.

Get a checkup with your doc. You may not feel the effects today, but you probably will tomorrow.

I was a passenger some years back in a car that got rear-ended; we were slowed down for traffic to ~25mph, the other guy never slowed down and was going ~60mph. Felt okay right after the accident but I could hardly move the next day.

A hard impact like that, it’s better to not see it coming. Tensing up can cause even more injuries.

OP: Hope you heal ok. Might be a good idea to take an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen before you go to sleep because you’ll be sore in the morning, unfortunately. Ask me how I know.

Probably texting and didn’t want to admit it.

He popped you pretty good. I’m sorry to hear it.

If you haven’t already, go see a doc if any whiplash pain doesn’t subside within a few days. I have clients who end up in a bad way with far less property damage.

I hope you are okay.

I took the MSF motorcycle class when I was 16 and learned to always watch your mirrors while at lights. I have never gotten out of that habit and it saved me from getting rear ended once.

My guess is they total it. If they are in the fence about it, I'm sure inquiring about diminished value up front will push it over the edge.

Most insurance companies will total a truck if it needs a frame.

Holy cow! Glad you are ok. Is one picture your truck and the other picture the other guys truck?

Replacing the frame on my truck cost $15,000. Another $7,000 to replace various other parts, body work, and paint. My truck was only 6 months old with 6,000 miles, so fixing it was 40% of the price of what I paid for it and 35% of what a new one would have cost.

In addition to being checked, do not sign anything or talk to his insurance company.

Let your insurance company know and take their advice. My daughter was rear ended in her work truck she had whiplash but no damage to the truck (big bumper hitch) The guy’s insurance company decided it wasn’t enough to payout anything. That meant time off work etc. wasn’t covered.

You will probably get real sore in the next couple days. Also don’t forget that whiplash can cause concussions if hit hard enough.

These (sparebumper.com) help immensely for such incidents.

Glad you are at least mostly O.K.. Times like that it’s so much better to have that larger vehicle, the heck with gas mileage.

I gave a car to a sister about 3 years ago, 2009 Vibe running just fine. A guy hit her at a snowy MI intersection this Winter, his fault. He even got a ticket, her car was totaled.

She wasn’t physically hurt bad, but got very little out of the deal, minimum insurance.

At times like these(yours) with the other clearly at fault, it would be nice to get some $$ out of their hide.
