If I can get anything that doesn't require me having to call that 800 number and speak to people that are so unhappy and useless, sign me the *&^% up!

I had to call both Direct TV and Spectrum(internet) one afternoon. I had a headache for an hour after.

Serenity NOW!!!

Verizon's wireless 5G is going to bring some serious competition to the internet access marketplace. Currently communication companies own rights to the hard line connections and that's why there's such a monopoly and lack of options. 5G wireless will be available anywhere there's a signal and eliminates the need to build, buy or lease hard lines, not to mention they don't have to worry about downed lines and routine maintenance. As long as the main lines and towers are working, service is provided. Verizon has been working hard on this for quite some time, expanding their fiber optic bandwidth and updating their towers. They can (and hopefully will) undercut the Comcasts in the marketplace and with wireless phone plans and online streaming, may even eliminate the need of wired connectivity for the average user.

I'm already getting offers to "lock in" my current internet service at 1/2 of what I'm paying just as long as I extend the agreement for 3 more years. Other family members are getting offers from Xfinity while under contract. My Uncle whose TV and phone contract just expired didn't increase a penny. I called in to help him find a new plan and they defaulted to keeping his "new service discount" on his plan even though it was supposed to go up $50 after the first 2 year period. Communication companies have been taking advantage of their customers for years and would rather lose them to a competitor than match their competitor's new customer rate. Now they're begging people to extend and keep the new contract discounts by default. With 5G coming, they are now changing their customer retention approach and all I have to say to them is this: Get bent.
And IMO therein lies the future. Cable companies have had almost a monopoly on internet service in the past, but when 5G is finally up and running like it should be in the next few years, it will offer consumers another good option for internet service that should help push cable costs downward. And it won't just be Verizon offering the service, but rather, all large cellular providers. Hopefully that competition will push costs down and keep them down from where they are today. Unfortunately, 5G will likely prove hellish for companies trying to recover from hurricanes here in Florida though, given the number of transmitters that will have to be replaced or repaired after a storm.

Yes. Eventually.

I have a love / hate relationship with the cord cutting. We were early adopters and did it about six years ago. We have two Firesticks hooked up to modern 4k TVs. ... Maybe I'm getting old and cranky, but the constant fluctuations in sound and picture quality combined with the need to sign in to certain apps constantly has driven me round the bend.

Maybe you're doing it wrong?

We're currently using an Amazon FireTV Gen. 2 with the Channels app (for our Silicon Dust HDHomeRun CONNECT network tuner and DVR), Netflix and Amazon Prime. Not doing 4k, but do have a 46" HD display and 5.1 DD/DTS surround. Have not experienced noticeable fluctuation in PQ or sound on any of those sources.

It's cord-cutting. You are not anchored to any particular streaming service, or any particular ISP (if you have local choices).

And it can be significantly less expensive. Silicon Dust launched a Premium TV offering to go with their OTA TV network tuners. They started a What things do you like about Premium TV? thread. People are commenting on loving having trimmed $100 or more a month from the subscription TV bills.

We're paying an aggregate recurring fee of $27/month for the DVR service (unlimited everything), Netflix and Amazon Prime. We could drop any one of them at any time, or add that SD $35/mo. package, or whatever we want.

To that you of course have to add the cost of the Internet connection, but we'd have that in any event, so I regard that as a wash.

Freedom, flexibility, cost.

I have gone to only internet programming at home as well. The cost for cable TV has gotten so expensive for the little I used it. There is plenty of content through Amazon Prime,Netflix and others.

We cut the cord in 2008 and haven’t looked back but once. We did briefly add cable back after a move in 2012 but it didn’t last long.

We use our firetv and appletv as well as an over the air antenna. Fast internet makes all the difference.

I called the 800# on one of the mailers sent to my house. It was all done over the phone, including installation date (they had to run a new line). I bought a Roku Ultra because I have a 4K UHD TV. It works great, and is $90 less per month than what I was spending with WOWWAY.

Thanks for the help

About this time last year, I was in the research phase in preparation for cutting the cord.

You may remember a thread late last year about calling Direct TV and asking for the customer retention department or something similar and asking for a discount. I made the call and was able to reduce our satellite bill to less than $20 per month. But that discount is about to expire and my bill is going to jump to about $60 per month.

The timing on this thread is perfect. It appears the options to cut cutters has expanded a great deal in the last 12 months. I’m once again looking to cut the cord. But based on the article referenced by bigdeal I may be able to get Direct TV to drop the cost again.

Watching and learning.

Cord cutting will be the norm as will high prices. I currently have just gigabyte F/O internet that costs me $90 a month. I could get the same internet with phone and cable for $20 more Roll Eyes

I also have Hulu, Netflix, Prime, YouTube Red, HBO Now...with those services you do the math.

Yup. I’m still rocking my Dish. Upgraded everything to 4K this year and pretty happy. Easy to keep the price down for me. I get all the movie channels and have almost eliminated the basic cable channels. I keep pressuring them for a la carte.

I don’t like everything running over the Internet. I love the redundancy I have setup. I’ve never had the net and the satellite go down at the same time. And I tried Netflix 4K and some other streaming stuff. The compression they use is terrible. The audio compression on Netflix is total shit. I’m going the other way and canceling streaming services. I’ll stay with Netflix for their snail mail Blu Ray option.

Soon when everyone has 10 different streaming services they are paying for along with the internet fees they will paying just as much as they did for cable. Then when they look at HULU, Netflix, Prime, Youtube Red, Firestick, Apple, Vue, Disney, etc etc.... Then someone will come along and bundle all of the different streaming services for you in one package and it will be cable all over again.

I just spent a hour on the phone with Dish. I’ve been a subscriber for 17 years but loyalty is meaningless to them.

Basically, they promised to upgrade me from a Hopper 1 to a Hopper 3 for no cost and also give me a $40 credit each month for a year. That was Oct 2.

When the installer showed, he said he could only upgrade to an older Hopper 2 and a call to Dish said I needed to pay $150 to go to a Hopper 3. I sent the installer packing.

Now a month later, no credit. Today’s call said I get one month credit. You’re kidding right?

Luckily, we’re leaving for winter in a month so Dish will go on pause until spring. I think I’ll dump them then. Too many lies.

Mike

But if you play the game well, you don't have a bunch of additional costs for additional options, As a T-Mobile customer, I get a free subscription to Netflix and my favorite, the MLB Network. We are Prime members because of my wife's merchandise ordering, so Prime Movies was a bonus. Now add one pay subscription to YouTube TV and I'd have all the channels I have now on cable, for about ~$100 less a month.

That's predicated on people needing that many streaming services. The truth of the matter is most people use very little of what bundled services offer. E.g.: We have OTA TV (with DVR), Netflix, and Amazon Prime. $27/mo. and we never want food something fun/interesting to watch.

If we had any more channels, we wouldn't be able to use them. So why would we want to pay for them?

My wife and I have a unique situation. We are full timing in our Motorhome. We get Internet from a cell phone plan. I have never had a WiFi at an RV Park able to adequately handle the amount of bandwidth needed to adequately supply simple basic internet service let alone able to stream. Our only hope will be when 5G is available throughout the country. So DiSh or local programming and an occasional cable.

I waiting due to F1, we trialed YouTubeTV and PSVue and went with YT for the better interface & more ESPN coverage.

Longer DVR retention with YT too.

Comcast, instead of taking advantage of cord cutting will punish you with much higher prices for standalone high speed internet such that it's not worth it.

One trick is to get a "double play" package from them with a stripped down TV package just to get the high speed internet you want. You then would basically never use the TV part, you just have it because the same high speed internet is actually more than the double play.

You'd think they would see this coming and try to get ahead of it, but instead they are acting like the buggy and buggy whip makers did in the early 1900's when the newfangled "automobile" burst on the scene. Roll Eyes
