mcrimmWant to Referee a HS FB/BB game for $60 - Apparently Not in Montana
I’m the OP. As a footnote, for a number of years I did the radio broadcast for our HS football and boys/girls basketball. Generally I had an hour of prep time and a couple of hours of actual broadcasting. Our local radio station paid me a flat $20 per game. I didn’t do it for the opportunity to move into a higher tax bracket.

old rugged crossPart of the issue is you need to trained to do the job. Nobody is going to go from watching tv sports to being and official at the high school level in a day or two. There is lots to it. Even in MT. you are talking about 100's to upwards of a few thousand spectators possibly. So you better have your act together and know all the rules. Plus you have kids safety on your plate as well. $60 is a bit of an insult imho for those going into this kind of a job, prepared. I have a lot of respect for those willing to do it.And do not think a fair wage is too much to ask. I would say at least double the $60 would be a good start.

erj_pilotOfficiated USA Hockey for 13 seasons...1990 thru 2003. 3-man crew (1 ref/2 linesmen) got paid $100 for the crew per game, split $40/$30/$30. I think the crew got $150 if it was tier-2 tournaments and the like. I wouldn't do it today for no less than twice that amount.
Old rugged cross is spot on...officiating ANY sport takes time to train to proficiency and to remain qualified. You just don't show up, put on some stripes or a blue shirt, and start officiating. I enjoyed just about every game I officiated and only 2 or three stand out where there was conflict from a coach or parent that made the game miserable. For hockey players, the vast majority of the kids were actually VERY polite and well-mannered.

It's happening. From cameras to sensors to motion analysis. Games won't be the same when software is the judge, jury, and executioner.
