there are ways to 'do more' in a training environment. for instance -- when a unit runs in formation, the NCOs will typically ask for volunteers to be 'Road Guards'. the road guards run ahead and stop traffic. so they actually end up running a little extra mileage and at a quicker pace as they dart back and forth in front of / and behind the larger running formation of soldiers... volunteer any chance you get and there's an opportunity to excel.
This! It's like doing wind sprints. I did this for several years in one unit I was in and finally max'd my 2-mile run. I think you get more out of it being a rear road guard then in the front.
Range peer reviews - I wouldn't necessarily volunteer for everything, but help your fellow students when you can. Always have your Ranger buddy's back.
I could probably write several pages of after action comments of what I would do better/different from my time at Ranger School. But that was a long time ago in an Army far, far away....
When he gets ready to actually start Ranger School, come back to this thread and I can provide some 45 y/o pointers. Some do not age with time.
