California woman who fell into a "vault toilet" while trying to retrieve her phone

Yep. It's going to cost her way more than the several hundred dollars for a replacement phone when she has to be hospitalized and put on IV antibiotics to combat a nasty eye/skin/genital/etc. infection from swimming in undiluted human excrement for an hour.

When I had just started with my current agency we used to have to check out firearms at the range when we trained. Back then the range hadn’t been developed as much and had a line of porta-potties instead of flush toilets.
At the end of the day of the older, near retirement ladies, was using one of the johns. In the process of putting her duty belt back on the gun fell out of the old school holster and into the tank.
She returned to the range house, turned in the magazines, and informed the staff where the gun could be found.
Legend goes that it still has a slight “blue” tint. It was eventually traded in with the rest of the old guns to LC Action in San Jose when we switched to Gen 4’s.
Somewhere in the country is a real “shitty” Gen 3 22.

Last year local first responders had to recover the body of a diver who drowned doing work in a manure tank.

That's a shitty way to go.
But according to the news report, it was his own fault... He was an experienced open water diver in rivers and the ocean, but reportedly lacked the proper equipment for a dive into a manure tank:
quote:
Frank Frosolone, owner of Northern Divers USA, the company that recovered Baenziger’s body, said it did not appear Baenziger had on the proper gear for a dive into liquids contaminated with manure and food waste.
“It’s a contaminated dive, so we had to use specialized suits with double seals and triple backup air supply and communications. You got to have the right stuff,” he said. Frosolone said he did not believe Baenziger was using protective equipment, such as a harness or a backup air source. “He didn’t have any of that stuff,” he said.

Wait...she dropped her phone into the shit, fell in the shit trying to retrieve her phone, couldn't climb out, so she used her phone to call 911. What kind of phone was it, that's an awesome phone.

This week I saw some stupid 20ish girl drop her cell phone 5 times in about 30 minutes at the auto registration office.

Everything is backed up to the cloud so the phone is just a phone and if it falls into a vault of shit it’s gone. Don’t want it if it can be fished out and definitely not risking falling in.

Well, it's early in the season. I'm sure it was not a good experience but try that in August.

Sounds like a serious case of overreach.
"Mountain House" now has a whole new meaning.
Her rescue message: "help, Im in deep doo doo."
After falling in headfirst there is no doubt she was talking shiite and plenty of it.
Everybody wants to know what phone that was - for once it worked in the crappiest conditions.

Drops phone. “Crap.”
Falls head first into excrement: “SHIT!”
Rescuer pulling her out: “Get the inch and a half ready.”

There was a sign on the inside of the stall door in one of the bathrooms at my PD that said "check for wallet". I don't know who put the sign there but one of my captains always left his wristwatch and wallet and keys in the middle of his desk when he went to the crapper...

If she was not injured then she is a tougher person than me. I would have been mentally scarred for life if I fell into one of those.
About 10 year ago we had a friend who dropped hers into a porta potty. And yes, she stuck her hand in and retrieved it.

Illustrates how attached people are to their phone and to what lengths they will go to to hang onto it. I've watched mine float to the bottom of the lake through a ice hole and never even attempted to make a grab for it I knew it was already too late and I didn't want to wind up with a soaking wet jacket out on the ice.
I've since bought one of these and never have to worry about that happening again.
