JellyCalifornia woman who fell into a "vault toilet" while trying to retrieve her phone
Firefighters in Washington state rescued a California woman who fell into a "vault toilet" while trying to retrieve her phone at Olympic National Forest on Tuesday, authorities said.
The woman, who was in her 40s, was using a toilet at the top of Mt. Walker when she dropped her cellphone down into the vault, the Brinnon Fire Department said.
She attempted to take the toilet apart, disassembling the seat and housing and used her dog’s leash to fish out the dropped phone, according to authorities.
When the woman used the leashes to help support herself, fire officials said the leashes failed, and
she slid headfirst into the vault. After spending nearly 20 minutes trying to climb out, she used her cellphone to call 911.
Brinnon and Quilcene firefighters responded to the mountaintop around 3 p.m. and made a "makeshift cribbing platform" tall enough for the woman to stand on and pulled her to safety, fire officials said.
The woman was not injured during the incident.
"The patient was extremely fortunate not to be overcome by toxic gases or sustain injury," the fire department said.
Rescuers washed the human waste off her and gave her a disposable Tyvek suit to wear, officials said.
Despite firefighters encouraging the woman to seek medical attention after being exposed to human waste, officials said she declined and continued back to California.

Why is your cell phone out while you’re taking a dump on top of a mountain?
Selfie?

Its modern take on the outhouse. Basically a big tank buried in the ground that can pumped out as needed.

Russ59I think this is indicative of people's lack of common sense and the ability to think critically.
It's likely an older phone and not worth retrieval. Just let it go.

JellyKnowing the area i'm surprised she got cellular coverage. There is many spots in the mountains around here in Western Wa where cellular coverage is very limited to none at all.

darthfusterSeveral years ago I was cleaning a suppressor in my shop. There are spiders that live in the corners and the dark places in my shop. This suppressor has a blue O-ring in the booster section. After reassembly, I grabbed an air hose and shot some compressed air into the throat of the suppressor. Out flies the O-ring. I watched it arc up and then down into one of those spidery places. I walked over and peered into a huge web that had a fresh hole where the O-ring had penetrated. I shuttered and made a skrinched up face and said," Nope." I went in the house and emailed Knight's Armament with my story. They sent me three more O-rings free of charge. They must have spidery corners in their shop too.
Had I dropped my phone into the sludge, I would have watched it sink and then bought another one.
