I'm about a year out from being in the market for a new (to me) truck. Looking at current pricing I'll probably be looking in the 2015-2017 range. I'm usually a Chevy guy, but they way they bury the few options I want in the higher trim packages is really distasteful to me. What I want is:

Large V8 (400+HP)
Crew Cab
4 wheel drive
Lockers
As little else as possible

Recently I rediscovered the Power Wagon. I hadn't considered a Ram before and I'm not a huge fan of the styling, but it seems like it has everything I want and then some as standard equipment without having to jump through trim package hell to get it. The solid axles are a very nice bonus as well.

That said, does anyone here have experiences with these trucks? On paper they look really good, but do they have any issues I should know about before I go look at one?

"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

In a gas V8 3/4 or one ton I would lean towards an F250 or F350 myself.

I have 2 neighbors that own that model.
One for 4 years, the other for 2 or so....

They are very happy with them, as one uses it for his work truck.

His F250 is his horse hauler....
And loves them both, but for very different purposes.

I'm inexplicably biased against Ford products, but I could overlook pretty quickly if I could get the options I want without having to repeatedly add packages I don't want to get what I do. Maybe I'll have to spend more time playing with their configuration tool.

Dodge did have some transmission issues and recalls.

"What Went Wrong with the Transmissions in the Dodge Ram Trucks?
The transmissions that are related to common complaints and recalls for Dodge Ram trucks are five and six-speed automatic transmissions. These were found in the 2009 Dodge Ram and 2010 through 2017 Ram models 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500."

I wish they still offered them in more vehicles.

Be great if the body and frame lasted as long as the drivetrain. Tough choice these days.

I’m just curious, which of those options require an expensive package to get?

When you say “lockers” are you referring to locking front hubs or locking differentials? I could see a front locking differential being part of an expensive package. You could have an aftermarket one installed if that’s the issue.

I had an old 4WD Dodge Cummins 12 valve pickup I bought cheap because the manual transmission was muerto. Traded a machinist friend a pistol and case of ammo for rebuilding it.

Only vehicle I ever owned that had the driver’s door fall off. Good engine, though.

I have a 2018 Megacab 2500, 4WD, diesel. Best vehicle I ever owned. 30 mpg at 55 mph. 58,000 miles on it so far, and it has been very excellent.

I’ve had my 2006 Power Wagon for 12 years. Currently has 155,000 miles. Terrible gas mileage and doesn’t ride too great but those aren’t the reasons I bought it. I also consider myself a GM guy when it comes to full size trucks, but no other company makes anything like the Power Wagon. I know there have been comparisons to the Ford Raptor, but that’s like comparing Oranges and Lima Beans. If you want to go Baja racing, Raptor is the way to go. If you want to take a full size truck at a slower pace deep into logging trails and beyond, Power Wagon cannot be beat by any other factory truck. 2500, hemi, front and rear locking differentials, electronically disconnecting sway bar, 33 inch tires, 4.56 gears (in the older ones) 34 gallon tank, Warn 12k pound winch, and some heavy duty skid plates. Yes, I’ve been satisfied with mine for the reasons I bought it. I haven’t had to have much of anything repaired that weren’t expected wear items. Good luck with your search!

I came bout THIS close to buying a 2022 recently. Researched it forever. Ultimately, because my job requires me to drive up into middle Tennessee 2-3 times a week I just couldn’t justify it because of the gas mileage. Wonderful truck and love everything about it. Rides better than any other 3/4 ton too. It’s the Jeep Rubicon of trucks.

Got a 2022 Rebel 5.7 instead at about 12% BELOW MSRP and 0% from Mark Dodge in Lake Charles, LA and will take delivery tomorrow. Took almost 5 weeks to get built. Pretty great nowadays. It will be my second 1500. Love ‘em.

Anyway, if your looking for a value way to get into a new Power Wagon, build a Ram 2500 Tradesman and add the Power Wagon Package.

The ZF transmissions they’ve used throughout the gas lines for years are proven, efficient and reliable.

When purchasing a new service truck for my business, I ruled out diesels real quick. I ruled out the Ram 6.4 gas motor based on transmission issues, spark plug issues and exhaust manifold leak issues. If Ram would sell the Aisin with the 6.4 hemi it would be a much better drive train package

Friend of mine has one. He says it passes everything on the road. Except a gas station.
