Watching 80’s movies with kids of today’s generation
My boys are 20 now; still live with me part time. Once a week or so I get a ‘movie night’ out of them. I’ve been taking them through mostly 80’s movies, plus a few classics - 7 Samurai, Godfather, Casino, Kill Bill, etc, but mostly 80’s. They struggle with the comedies.
Tonight we did Tommy Boy (Chris Farley and David Spade). It's hard for them to enjoy 80's movies because when people get themselves into trouble out in public, they think like kids of today..."well, that's going viral and your life is over". That's all they know...they can't conceive of the idea of not always being under surveillance and public scrutiny 100% of their life.
Make's me a little sad for them actually.

I've quipped to Mrs. DF many times how grateful I am that I went through childhood, adolescence and young adulthood without the internet and social media. The things I did that would mortify me now are gone forever; my dignity intact. I do feel sorry for the Jr DFs though.

Interesting. My son just turned 25, he and his girlfriend love watching classics from decades ago; shit, my son was blown away by Citizen Kane, he loves it. But they love 70s, 80s comedies- Animal House, Ferris Bueller, Trading Places, Caddyshack, etc.

I started watching Star Wars: A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back this weekend with my boys age 6 and 8 and they’re loving it.
What’s really funny is my wife’s family apparently were big fans of the TV series Perfect Strangers and we found it on one of the streaming platforms and they love that too! This message has been edited. Last edited by: PASig,

In 2020, Valley Girl was remade featuring Alicia Silverstone. Slight change to the story, but what I enjoyed most was the improvement in the selection of songs ~ all 80's hits.
If you can stand, Valley speak it might be a fun movie for you with your kids.

If they hate Episodes I-III and VII-IX, you know they've been raised right.

Perfect Strangers, you mean? Another sign that they have excellent taste at such a young age!

Take them back further with Lee Marvin in "Ship of Fools" 1965. Purposely made in black & white.

Really?
It had a great soundtrack. One of the best songs of the 80s was on it.

Yes...DOHHH Perfect Strangers. I edited my post.
I'm not even sure they'll be watching Episodes I-III (Boring CGI crap) and VII-IX (Just awful and totally unnecessary garbage)

In the early-mid 2000's when my kids were young I couldn't wait to show them great movies from my youth. I started with E.T., they thought it sucked, broke my heart. It stung too much to try again

Not an 80s movie per se, but if you have Prime video check out "Air." Not a fan of Damon and Affleck, but they were pretty good. The 80s soundtrack, clothes, and cars were pretty cool.

One of my favorites is Uncle Buck.
Now that was some good stuff.
I love watching good movies with my kids. It can definitely be hit or miss.

Back in 2020 we rented a cabin in the mountains for Thanksgiving. The kids would have been about 12 and 8 at the time. We watched Die Hard that week and it became a Christmas movie. We now watch it every year. It drives my wife nuts that the other three people in the house refer to it as Christmas movie.
However, she is a really good sport about it. So much so that when we made our annual trip to see Santa in our PJ's this past year, she had Die Hard shirts made for us.
