I joined, specifically an antique / historical homeowner subforum, looking for an online source for some antique window components. First, I had a hard time posting photos. Then, the answers I was getting were no different than what I was hearing from local window sources. (Replace the windows - don't repair them). While there are advantages to that in terms of energy efficiency, etc., I was disappointed that an antique / historical forum would suggest that. Akin to someone telling you to "tacticool" a historical firearm. JMHO.

Hi! I've always been a bit skeptical about joining this kind of forum, but here I am, lol ) Reddit isn't necessarily any different than this, except for the interface, which is much prettier imho. The moment you understand how to use it for your interest, it can give you a range of possibilities you wouldn't even have thought about. I have to say its anonymity can lead to toxic behavior, trolling, and misinformation, and many subreddits can become echo chambers that promote extreme views. Despite these drawbacks, it's a very good source of potential for positive social and personal impact when used responsibly. Btw, some sites sell Reddit accounts for various categories of users. There's Digital Store Net, where they suggest accounts with a certain amount of karma points, based on your needs. Take a look, maybe you find a category that interests you! This message has been edited. Last edited by: mac_220, July 08, 2024 05:34 AM

The gatekeepers make the difference. Here it’s humans that we all engage with on other occasions and not AI type programmed monitoring. Lots of other more subtle differences but that’s the most important.
the nice thing about reddit as compared to Dem U is that you can go in there and troll the sh_t out of the idiots without ideology screening and approval. sometimes i check out the politics thread, more ignorant people you will not find on the planet

I totally get your take on Reddit! It’s a bit of a love/hate thing for me too—there’s a subreddit for almost everything, and the info you can find is amazing. I’m part of a few groups for stuff like cooking and tech tips, and I’ve learned a lot. But yeah, as soon as politics comes up, things can get intense, and it sometimes feels like people are just there to argue.
What’s helped me is sticking to subreddits focused on my interests. I found some great tips on https://hackstacks.com/ about using Reddit better, like filtering content and subscribing to subreddits you like. It’s really helped me avoid the chaos and keep things fun. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Phelen_Kell, November 01, 2024 06:18 AM

It’s the most left leaning of all the social media platforms which is why you never hear anyone wanting to sensor it.
I got kicked off for watching a big fight at McDonalds and simply replying that they were acting like animals. No big loss.

Left leaning? Have you looked at NextDoor? I've been kicked off twice! One "offense" -- alleged violation of community standards -- my entire post was "She sounds like an angry woman." I was kicked off for that.

^^^^^ I wish I could get kicked off NextDoor. I joined, discovered it was useless, and unjoined. But I still get the damned emails. They’re routed to my junk mailbox, but I still have to glance at the junk before deleting all.
Serious about crackers.

I follow a few Subreddits for particular interests. I don't think I'd use it for general conversation, etc.
Even on the specific topics, you have to read the Subreddit for a few days. Some are full of lunatics and basement trolls, and others police themselves better.

I like Reddit for home improvement type stuff. You can learn a lot from those subs and they don’t encourage off-topic lunacy.

A young person sees the world as a still picture, immutable. An old person has had his nose rubbed in changes and more changes and still more changes so many times that that he knows it is a moving picture, forever changing. He may not like it--probably doesn't; I don't--but he knows it's so, and knowing is the first step in coping with it."

I have never seen the Redditors so freaked out and lashing out like they are doing today. On my state sub, it's a sight to see and I think they know what's coming this Tuesday.
I'm sticking around just long enough to see the meltdown, there's just too many leftist activists and mentally ill people on there. The place is toxic.

Never tried NextDoor so I’ll take your word for it.

Reddit is NextDoor but on a global level and on steroids.

Been totally banned for a week, banned from about 10 pages as well
All I said was " Go Team Orange!" They said it was inciting violence and hate speech

It did incite hate speech, from all the people "offended" on those pages LOL!

It's a mark of honor to have these thin-skinned, perpetually offended losers ban me. I plan to be all banned by this time next week, LOL
In a discussion about the very warm weather here in PA (and 3/4 of them screeching on about how climate change will kill us all) someone retorted that "this is nothing new, this is just Indian Summer we are having this year".
I warned them that they'll probably get in trouble for using that term on Reddit.
